Logged on today, it says 3k players are on.
I go to the forums and apparently 5k players is the max since Uprising.
Considering this is a FREE TO PLAY "AAA" shooter, that's really, REALLY low.

Rejoice capsuleers who hated Dust bunnies, you probably won't have to deal with them soon(tm)!

Um, this forum is reserved for "Eve is dying' posts.

Please place the 'DUST is dying' posts in the proper forum.

Mmmkay thanks.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

This is a public service announcement.
EVE isn't dying, its healthier and bigger than ever.
Dust is dying, you may now bash CCP for wasting development time for EVE.

Dust is still on beta, and the influx of "tourists" has severely dwindled since the beta started. the players that are playing it now are already hooked on it and will continue after live, also you should keep in mind, that the game has some mayor fluctuations between weekdays and weekends. there's 3x the players on weekends.

starting off the current 4k players i see usually, its not crazy to expect 50k+ players online at the same time on the first 3 months evening out to 16k - 20k on the next 10 months once the "tourists" move on to the next new thing.

considering that eve has an average of 35k players online at any given time i would say that aiming for 16k sustained is a fairly realistic and attainable goal, specially on a free to play game.

the real question is will dust pay for itself or will EVE have to found it? CCP doesn't disclose the "dollar per player" that's being spent, and even if they did, money spent on Beta is hardly an indication of how the game will fare on live.

A few problems with that:
Dust is releasing on the 14th of May, and boy is it not ready for release.
This game will be hammered by bad reviews all around, which won't help in the playerbase growth.
Those 5k players?
That was on the day of release on a much advertised update.
As the build gets older, player counts will drop to even lower than that.
Also, EVE is a subscription based MMO, Dust is free to play, in most games only 5% of the playerbase spends any amount of money on it.
Even lower on a monthly basis.
At this rate, it will take over 200 years to recoup the investment for Dust.

Would have +1'd you if you had the presence of mind to say soon™.

What was the total investment vs income? You would need those numbers to calculate your answer. Thanks in advance.

I'll give a damn about Dust when it's released on the PC! Until that day, it can die a thousand deaths...

....ya, you see what I did there.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Titans on fire outside "The Alamo" of NOL-M9. I watched massive Super Capital fleets glitter in the dark near the BKG-Q2 gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain...  Time to die.

Sure, why not. Next time use alt+0153 though. It looks pro.

Last I checked, 20mil was invested into Dust.
Might be higher now.

First problem with Dust - only console, cannot play on PC.

Second problem with Dust - Physics? What physics? I saw several vids on YT and gameplay suffers a lot. Environemts is plastic and articial becouse of it.

Third problem - Graphics quality. Damn.. its 2013 game and world is really mediocre at best. I had made better textures back in 2004 for DX8 games (low budget).

I wouldn't say Dust is dying but it needs a lot of work yet and better media PR. People are expecting top quality and top of the line technology in there.

I would definately like to pay for Dust account on my PC, beiing able to land my ship and do some exploration/covert ops in TPP/FPP mode, using Dust gear etc.
Maybe teaming up with my corpmates or other ppl.

EVE started out with around the same number.

except sony paid for most of it, and they paid for it to pave the way for their release of Planetside2 on the PS4.

CCP is paying to keep it running, how long is really up to the dollar/player spent, and we don't know that yet.

EVE is a subscription MMO, guaranteed 15 dollars a month per player.
In the Dust the player pays when he wants to, and can play all day long.
Also, there are fees on the PS3 that don't exist on PC, hence whatever profit they make is even lower.

Wait what?
Where did you get that Sony paid for it?
Why would they even do that?

I just replied to one of the many threads on this on the Dust forum:

Quote:
Seems fine. 5K isn't the peak, it's almost a continual number. Lowest I've seen is 3.5K. It only really becomes an issue if there are no battles available.

And if you think they do matter, you have to ask why (from a players point of view; this game is financed by microtransactions and EvE subs). Is it a prestige thing? Is it like kiddies with their fake Facebook "friends" (more is "better")?
