And how would you know running a pseudo software that does nothing more than give you the good feeling of protection and nothing more?

The best antivirus is a competent user tbh. Antivirus software is a tool that's used as required for a competent user, and a crutch for the incompetent.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

By not being a completely incompetent user? There are no shortage of signs. Unknown processes running? Might want to check those out. Abnormal network utilization? Something might be awry. Increased CPU utilization (especially by aforementioned unknown process)? Better look into that.

It's not like AV software is possessed of any magical powers. Heuristic matching is still generally pretty poor, signature matching is worthless against 0-day, and if it isn't 0-day, there's probably a patch (unless it's Java, in which case... good luck :D).

The only real way to tell if EVE is infected is to log in and watch your characters in the captains quarters, if every now and then they scratch their crotch you know EVE is infected.

I blame the goons.

This is not a signature.

Open the file properties for your blue.dll. It should show the following stats (if you've patched today):

Size: 2,578,048 Bytes

Then click on the "Digital Signatures" tab, select the signature (if there's no such tab or no signature there's something wrong with the file).

Click on "Details". The new window should tell you that the digital signature is valid - if the file got modified (e.g. through some virus or trojan), it will tell you that the signature is not valid.

Antivirus and the programers who work hard at trying to ensure their software is protecting you have a heavy burden upon them .

so many viruses are constructed in such fashion now to be seen as a harmless program .

and in this day in time what prevents eve from being any different from the latest malware trolling the net .

the answer is not much (if you discount the graphics) only thing eve has going for it is that its from a trusted source .

and those people creating definitions usually know to trust ccp software but every now and then a peice of malware looks suspiciously like a common dll file , exe , or even sys files because they contain a similar signature . its all numbers to the computer
and the software cant tell the difference from one hash to another unless explicitly told to do so .

I personally think its quite amazing that antivirus dont go through and wipe your entire computer systems so kudos to those that create the algorithms that prevent that from occurring .

Unfortunately false positives are becoming more common and there might be a day when all antivirus is useless because its no longer able to keep trusted from untrusted separated. then we will have to rely on signed code, key pairs and hardware certificates just to run a simple program.

hopefully ill be dead by then .

Honestly the dude is kinda right about antivirus. 98% of antivirus is smart computer usage and keeping software up to date so exploits get plugged. If you do that, all the minor viruses won't get through generally. The ones that do get through and the antivirus software catches are also incredibly easy to remove. That leaves like .1% of malware which hits via cross site scripting and drive by downloads, uses 0d exploits, and has already been tested and designed to circumvent your antivirus software. These ones are almost never stopped by preventative antivirus, but can be cleared via boot disks or some antirootkit tools, or malwarebytes. And all of those are free. Except premium malwarebytes(which actually is totally worth it). So yeah generally paying for antivirus is a waste. You're better off using free tools and just understanding what qualifies as suspicious activity.

Source: I download too much porn and have to clean out malware a lot at work.

Your full of ****. legit sites like the MoD get owned and serve as sinkholes for malware. things such as blackhole/Zeus/SpyEye hide their pressence from the user so no you dont see any process running nor do you see increased CPU however decent AV would have caught that silent iframe redirect and it would also have caught those IE/Chrome/FF/Adobe/Java exploits and with cloud based heuristics you may even stand a chance to catch that Oday as soon as it tries to dial into its C&c
