How to use cloak to travel?

Just bought myself a Crane and fitted it with Covert Ops Cloaking Device II. This - after I lost 400 million ISK transporting stuff with Iteron Mk3

Now - I create a route, I select "Jump through stargate", and activate the cloak. But it looks like I have to activate it after every jump, and - only after I select again "Jump through stargate", else I get the message "Interference from the cloaking you are doing is preventing your systems from functioning at this time...."

So - I am uncloaked and visible for a little while after every jump, am I doing something wrong? I presumed I will be cloaked at all times.

yes, you have to reactivate the cloak after every jump. fortunately, you can use hotkeys to make it a little more convenient. just select the right gate, hit the jump through hotkey, then the cloak hotkey. only a very skilled gate camp will be able to catch you. most will not even bother.

I should buy an Ishtar.

You arent doing it wrong

There is no way to be totally cloaked all the time.
Each system you have to activate it (default hotkey will likely be F1).
And after you jump a gate you have gate cloak and first have to move before you can engage your cliaking device.
If done properly you will be visible for a brief second so it will take some good skills to catch you.

Warp and activate cloak. If you get error message, try activating cloak again.

I restrict myself to two activations, because if I try a third time I invariable deactivate by mistake.

The two activations are completely reflexive for me, so if a third is required, I re-evaluate the situation first.

Between jumping an cloaking, there is a small moment where you appear in space. A very skilled gatecamp will see that, click approach on it, and try to decloak you by getting within 2km. In a crane, this will never catch you because it's so fast. Unless you are caught in a bubble in Nullsec, that's another issue.

So, after a jump, align to your destination and cloak. EVE server runs at 1hz ticks- this means you have to carefully time your align and when you hit the cloak button, or you'll get that error. Just remember, DON'T spam the cloak when it happens. You'll end up cloaking, then decloaking and having to wait out the re-cloak timer.

You're not doing it wrong. You appear for a short bit before warping. Not a problem. Warp to a celestial (planet/moon usually) first before warping to your next gate (but not at 0 or 100) - or better yet to safespots you've made if possible - to approach the next gate in your route from an angle someone waiting for you doesn't expect. f11 brings up the solar system map bar on the side that can help you choose an approach. When you jump through a gate and you are still under the gate cloak everybody is under after going through a gate, align to a celestial or safespot first not to your next destination (angle again). Longer, yes, but watching people trying to find/kill you but getting away is kinda fun...until they do :) o/

edit: Oh, are you traveling in highsec? Then just burn direct from gate to gate. Don't worry about that second you're uncloaked right before warping off, np :)

When you jump into a system, select your next gate and hit WARP. As soon as you do that, activate your cloak. You should only be visible for about one second on anyone's overview

Usually, I jump into system, select stargate, hit D, then immediately after hit F1

Unless you are going through lowsec/0.0 most of the time just having a quickly aligning and warping ship will do wonders, which a Crane is wonderful for. I have my Viator set so that it aligns and warps in just around a second or two, so worse case scenario i activate cloak after i drop gate cloak and boom i am gone before they can even hope to decloak me.

I once podded myself by blowing a huge fart.

There's an aspect here that hasn't been mentioned, and is somewhat important.

You are concerned about that brief moment where your ship must decloak before re-cloaking at each gate. Well, as long as you are very quick about pressing the cloak button, your ship will never actually be target-able.

Here's a look at (a simplified version of) the communication between server and client in that moment. I'll assume a 200ms ping, which is actually quite low for eve:

Server sends to Client: Entering system

Client sends to Server: your Warp command (jump through stargate)

Client sends to Server: your Cloak command

Server receives: your Warp command (200ms after you sent it)

Server sends to Client(s!): Ship decloaking/entering warp

Server receives: your Cloak command (200ms after you sent it)

Server sends to Client(s!): Ship cloak activated

Client(s!) receive: "Ship decloaked/started warp"

Client(s!) receive: "Ship cloaked"

Provided there is no delay between your pressing of warp and cloak, there is actually zero chance for a 'ship being targeted' command to make it through to the server before you are cloaked.

SO! In just about any situation except an extreme ping discrepancy (someone living next to eve's server cluster vs. australia for example) you do not have to worry much about that brief moment of being decloaked. Unless you're in 0.0

The only issue with your idea...server works on a 1HZ interval. So it has update ticks each second...not ms

What works for me is to hit the cloaking module as soon as the "Warp Drive Active" text appears. Haven't been caught so far.

Nitpicking a deliberately ad-hoc example, way to go on that!

(a MORE simplified version)

You send cloak command

Server receives cloak command

Pirate receives decloak packet (too late!)

Length of the tick does not affect the queue....

There is no way to remained totally cloaked as that would be over powered (afk cloak warping would be rampant), so just make sure you hit that cloak button as soon as you click warp.

The align bonus from blockade runners is almost as valuable as the covert ops cloak. It isn't that uncommon that you will get a can't activate cloak because of x is within 2500km message. It is at that time you hope that those three nanofibers in your lows and your nozzle joints are enough for you to align in time. Also I believe that Evasive Maneuvering is a skill worth training to 5 early on for almost any player.

I used to use inertia stabilizers, but I believe the nano's hull penalty is better than the sig radius increase although am still not sure about this.

This is a matter of balance I think. nano's make you faster but also increase max speed. Warp is initiated on 75% of that max speed. I use Inertia + Warp Stabs when I expect that I'll get locked anyway, for example in a BattleCruiser. The idea is then to minimize the amount of time DPS can be applied while you warp off / burn back to the gate. I use nanos on ships with fast accelleration and align speed, to minimize the chance of getting locked on at all.
