I can see why they would remove the logs from the loot table -- it would be easy to lose track of which ones are still relevant down the line, etc. However, I very much like the idea and believe they should incorporated in the journal and new discovery probe system.

This is how I envision it:
-You kill a pirate and your ship manages to decode an outgoing transmission or something similar.
-Most cases the transmission is meaningless and your ship's log automatically filters them out. However, on occasion you intercept one that includes vital information like system location, etc. Your ship's log stores these and automatically alerts you to them.
-Now they act like the previous drops, except they include relevant information like timestamp for when the message was intercepted and an indicator showing ongoing activity from the receiving end of the message (i.e., the site is still active).
-When you arrive in the system and apply your discovery probe instead of having to scan down the site to pinpoint it, you'll automatically have a 100% warp in thanks to the log and prior information about the receiving end of the message (we can elaborate on the lore later).

Actually I prefer the idea of them being a lootable item as they used to be, that when consumed adds the bookmark and/or entry to your journal. That turns them into an item of value that players can sell if they are so inclined, which in turn makes them a tool for CCP to buff ratter income without adding to the faucet. Or, if they feel ratter income is already good enough, they could use it as a tool to nerf bounties without nerfing the income itself. Either way, the option for increased player interaction is a good thing.

e: The OP was talking about adding them into high and lowsec, but I see no reason why they couldn't drop in nullsec as well.

Making them lootable items is better for all of the reasons that mynnna mentioned. There is potential for the item to exchange hands, which means player interaction of some kind or another - be it market, contracts, theft, or blowing someone up for them.

This does make suicide ganking interesting, in a way. Someone with 20-30 logs flies by. The logs themselves may or may not have a lot of value on the market, but they do represent the possibility of good modules if the logs are analyzed and the expeditions completed. Do you want to blow that guy up for the chance of a reward later on?

I'm really pleased with the positive responses so far. If you do think that this idea is worthwhile - even in a very general sense, if not in the specifics - please remember to point your friends to this thread so that they can contribute as well. A thread with more attention / posts is more likely to catch CCP's attention.

I can very much guarantee you that the idea will catch CCP's attention, because I will bring it to their attention. Blink

It's a rare and wonderful thing to see an idea on this forum with (as far as I could tell with a quick scan) 100% positive feedback.

I really do hope CCP pick this idea up.

I'd like to thank Mynnna for supporting this idea on the The Third N blog, as well as Serpentine's two nice posts on the topic. Also, the other CSM members that I contacted directly once other people here didn't spurn the idea. Malcanis and Ali Aras both got back to me very quickly with positive feedback.

Serpentine's second entry points to a list of all ship logs in the game. They're well worth a read. Whoever wrote these things did a great job.

I think this is an awesome idea. It's the kind of small, iterative change that has the potential to provide not just new content, but new player behavior.

Posting here for public support as well.

When I resubbed, I had a hangar full of these things. I definitely thought this was how they worked, and that I was just failing to actually make them work. It would really add to the immersiveness of the game and the connectedness of the world ('hey! I just shot this rat, and the dumbass was carrying some intel! Awesome!). Plus, who doesn't love expeditions and the promise of shiny green loot?

+1 Great Idea!

Good old fashioned treasure hunt!

One thing I would love to see added as a source of income in sites like this. Pirate faction clothing! Take out a Serpentis storage depot, have a chance at getting a Serpentis t-shirt or jacket. It will not mean much now but if/when the WIS grows everyone will at least look different.

Bonus points for pirate hats and eye-patches !!

Gets my vote. I liek what someone said before about the players being able to submit ideas for the stories from the logs and being able to design the deadspace sites

This is a really appealing idea to me, and I think it would be a good thing to consider if CCP is going to iterate on the current combat sites and escalations (which I think they really should).
