I would like to suggest a way to make ships more unique

add in an ability for a player who is heavily invested into building ships the ability to modify the ship
the ability to modify the ship would be to allow them to add in one and only one additional slot on the ship
this means that you could have one additional slot for a better tank or more dps

give them the ability to add in One low, medium high or rig slot
or even increase the drone bay cargo hold ore hold or even change other stats on the ship
like the ability to extend the lock range or reduce the footprint of the ship
but you only get to add in one slot or modify one area to keep the ships balanced

this would make the ships unique and less of a cookie cutter feel to the ships

this would give people more reason to build ships

It would also undo all of the rebalance work that CCP has been performing for the last year.

Having the ability to completely customize anything usually doesn't produce the results it's proponents say it does ("more variety"). There will always be stats, slots, and ship bonuses that are more desirable than others... and people will, if given the chance, try to get those stats with certain slot configurations in order to "be the best."

All it will do is homogenize ship fittings and layouts.

it would not change the balance, read in detail, the customization proposed would be just a small part of the ship tech...

You don't think that a free slot with absolutely zero drawbacks of any kind would change the balance?

You're delusional.

Rigs already fill that role very nicely. There are tanking rigs, there are damage rigs, there are scanning rigs (my favorite), cargo rigs, you can even rig the kitchen sink in there!

the current slot layouts make you choose either as a form of balance. Know you are going for more a mugging tactic for the night you'd run less tank if armour and slap in some moar gyro/mag/sink. If its looking to be meat grinder night well then slap in some tank.

The bit in the second paragraph is already in game. You'd use CS/link t3 for this. CCP is even being nice here, in june the caldari mix informationation warfare with shields and gallente gets a second bonus as well. Should be a nice change as currently I would not fault a roam/fleet for opting to not take a gallente booster since information warfare by itself was not a very versatile way to fill in a booster slot. Also worth noting currently targettting range is a base leadership skill that does not even need a link. 10% at level 5 unless looking to run snipe rokh/naga fleets at edge of grid could offset sebo for some boats.

Footprint is also counterable by implants. the choice to not run them is a player made one. For the shield tankers there are extenders with reduced sig radius as well. Pricey at times, but they are an option.

People use non-tank rigs on combat ships?
