Hello,
How do you go about getting better relations with the Gallente or the other guys like Caldari? Think it's under standings or something.

Do missions for them (Specifically "Epic Arcs"), join Faction Warfare (Unadvisable for new player right out of the gate) or kill the enemies of the faction (Regular rats of all stripes, or other faction ships).

The fastest way (But the stupidest way) to do this is by blowing up Caldari/Amarr ships, and the Gallente/Minmatar will like you more, but if you do this in Hisec, you'll be killed by Concord if you attack first.

Go ratting, and kill as many as possible, or possibly join a player corporation and run the missions together.

The pie is a tautology

Run missions for them. you'll get faction missions which will bump your faction standing.

It can take a fair time though.

And as one goes up, 2 others go down (and one goes up. a bit) so you'll need to be careful in balancing them. Avoid missions where you kill a faction, unless you don't care about their standing and won't be going through their space.

This is completely false, you don't gain any standings for killing opposing faction, you only ruin your standings with whoever you're killing.

The main way and simplest (but by no means the fastest) way to improve standings is by grinding missions. Every 16 missions you'll get a storyline missions which will improve your faction standings with the faction you mission for and their allies, but lower your standings with their enemies.

Other ways of improving standings include FW, where for each rank gained you get quite substantial faction standing bonus (up to 20% for advancing to the highest militia rank).

There's also The plan (http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Faction_Standing_Repair_Plan) which I believe is the fastest way to gain standings, but also can be quite expensive.

Apart from faction standings there are also corporation and agent standings, which can be improved by normal (non-storyline) missions.
