I got a neat space ship looking toy for Christmas. It was made of this awesome soft, ivory coloured palstic; a ship of sorts, with 3 or 5 crew members. It could be taken apart and made into 5 individual ships, the "wings" of which were like pistols that shot out darts with big rubber bumpers on them.

Apparently the rubber bumpers often broke off and the plastic shaft became a sharp missile propelled by a powerful spring. The toy was recalled, and one day my mom packed it up and we went to the store to return it.

The awesome Micronaut Battlecruiser

Many good times were had shooting at dogs, cats, and schoolmates with this in preparation for Doc's later career in EVE.

There's a million angry citizens looking down their tubes..at me.

If you can find the original comics (there were 61) they are quite collectable. There is also rumor of a J.J. Abrams live action movie.

A lot of the old Micronauts stuff can still be had on eBay.

My first thought was "huh, I never really had any spaceship toys growing up"

Then I remembered the thousands of different ships I designed, symmetrical, asymmetrical; sleek, or ugly; from unmanned drones and single pilot fighters to frigates studded with turrets and crew.

Lego, Pencil, Paper.

Guess it all starts somewhere, heh.

My first spaceship drawings were circles with 2 points coming out of the front and flames (a long triangle) from the back indicating thrusters. Over time they developed designs on the main body, wings, and missiles. Then I saw a book about how to draw spaceships in 3d!!! I spent a year or 2 doing that and learned a lot about perspective Big smile

Oh, young 'un. 1967 for me.

I not only had the micronauts battlecruiser, but also the buck rodgers toys.... and yes, the battlecruiser was by far the better toy. Oh, the collection of Star Wars toys I had... and what they would be worth today!

BTW: My parents let me keep the battle cruiser, even after the recall. Of course, they also didn't make me wear a seatbelt in the car, allowed me to ride my bike all over the neighborhood including across busy streets, AND without a helmet!

I guess back when it was common to have 5 kids, they were less concerned about 1 or 2 of them not making it to adult hood.

Yeah, my folks used to throw the baby carrier into the spare tire in the back of the scout and call it good. And I remember riding in the back of the truck on top of a load of bark mulch, the wind blowing through my hair and the cars passing by below. Honestly I wonder about the trade in safety today for the joy and adventure of those days.

Hah. We'd have 8 kids (including neighbor kids) in the back of a pickup and drive 5 hours across the desert from Los Angeles to Lake Havasu to go fishing, boating, water skiing... camping out with the snakes and scorpions.

I think I remember wanting one of those ships. And the Big Trak was perhaps the best toy of the 20th century! Definately top 10.

I used to have a Major Matt Mason Lunar Base play set. That came out while the Apollo missions were still going. (Yeah, that's how old I am. Smile) The design of the structures and vehicles were kind of bizarre. A cross between the Apollo lunar module, the original series Star Trek sets and vehicles, and 1960s-era SciFi book and magazine cover art.

Poor Major Matt Mason. He went through a lot of astronaut training. Thrown 20 ft. in the air for free fall training. Centrifuged in the washing machine spin cycle. That kind of stuff.
