Yes, EVE can be played as a PVE game, "mostly" avoiding PvP.

CCP, wanting to have a game that appeals to many play styles, has created game mechanics that allow you to mostly avoid having your ship go boom, as long as you do not mess up.

My guess is, you may have messed up somehow.

If not, than you may have been suicide ganked, which would be VERY rare for a new player in a small frig transporting a cheap cargo.

You are never 100% "safe" from PvP when in a ship in space, however, you can get pretty darn close to it.

Exactly.

Eve is a PVP themed MMORPG, while it doesn't force you to directly participate in ship-to-ship combat. The environment in itself were designed based on conflict and interaction between players in whatever manner they want.

To respond to your first post, do you even know that Eve is one of the healthiest MMO ever on gaming history, subscription & player retention-wise? this/the current game model works, that's from the business perspective. As to your comments about Eve or PVP in general is not your cup of tea, well then maybe this is not the game for you (the game developers have said exactly the same thing publicly, so, there you go).

I don't think so. by work every year and staff member I don't see ;-). If it will be healthiest so we will see huge difference every year ;-). When I read every expansion (for me is just patch) so is small improvements.

I find this quote disturbing. So, should Jon Lander ever leave CCP, it will become a PvE game? Shocked

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Most of games have PVP. But also whey have space and for PvE. I really want that this game will grow for long time, but to do this is not enough 40k players if we compare work efficient and server care. Is many thing around developing and by work I can see that they are limitless to players ;-)

Eve has over 500k active subscriber. That 40k? that's well over most other MMOs out there. Even Moon Guard and Kil'Jaeden realms in WoW US (two of the most active/populated realm in WoW) are well below Eve's average activity.

Name one other MMO that's older than 3 years old and does not have declining subscription number and player activity besides Eve. Just one, I dare you.

PS: and don't mention Second Life, ever, just no. Holyshit.

Dungeons and Dragons Online. A bit cheating since it went F2P but still, you already disallowed SL which kindof negates the whole Eve is the ONLY one.

WoW servers are capped, not really a good comparison.

Oh, you want that one too?

1m and over

That leaves you SWTOR (F2P), Runescape, and WoW.

Very few games have over 1m subscribers. Your claim is that Eve "only has 40k subscribers" (Not true, 40k people logged in at any given time != 40k subscribers), and that it is not growing.

At FF they said they would like to hit 100k concurrent users soon™ while that may be a while off, I expect 60 or 70k concurrent users is not too far off. Currently it is showing 37k or so, and its not peak time Euro yet.

As you like pretty graphs, here is the server thingy since 2006 or so Server activity

With Odyssey only 1 month away, and the 10th anniversary coming up in a few days, and the launch of DUST, I think rumours of Eves demise may be a little premature ^^

without pvp there would be no need to buy ships and mods, and most players would just leave out of boredom if they didn't leave already when pvp was disabled.

also, popups are not there to be ignored, read them. not that you lost much but consider it an inexpensive lesson learned.

You're missing the point. I'm pretty sure Blizzard as one of the biggest and richest game developer out there can afford to invest in servers that could hold any number of players on a single realm if needed.

It's not about technical capabilities, it's about how the game environment works and how CCP has managed to lift themselves up from a small garage team of programmers to one of the most successfull game company with a product so unique (note this part), no one in the past decade ever managed to try the same concept and came close to what CCP has accomplished. Yes, people have tried sandbox MMOs before, single sharded concept before and space-themed MMOs before. Not a single one of them succeeded in the manner of what Eve Online is currently at.
