So I'm having 2 issues with EVE on my Win8 laptop, both of which appear to be mentioned in this thread:

1: Whenever I play EVE fullscreen, when I quit the game my desktop basically looks like a Carebear puked on it while tripping on acid. I can fix it by changing my resolution settings in Control Panel, this causes the monitor to do a soft power cycle, and when the picture comes back it is fine. That's not really a big concern for me, however;

2: If I have Mumble (voice chat) running and am connected to a server, when I try to run the EVE client it crashes to desktop shortly after it executes. I don't even make it to the login screen. From what I saw this is common not only with Mumble but with other voice chat clients as well (TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, et cetera)

So far those are the only two issues I have had with the EVE client specifically. However, I am annoyed as hell at Windows 8 in general, and after discovering the above I figure it's high time I downgraded. Even if Windows 8 has better performance, it's not worth the extra trouble of using the Metro GUI. Besides, since Win8 is still relatively new, most developers haven't been able to effectively patch their applications to work with the new OS.

Just a suggestion to anyone running a Microsoft OS, it may not be a bad idea to always use the oldest OS that is still supported, or the OS that came before the newest one. Generally Microsoft won't cut support for an OS until it's at least outdated by 1 1/2 times (i.e. they cut support for XP after Win7 had been out for a year or so). There are two reasons for this. One, Windows tends to follow an alternating trend of good, crap, good, crap. Windows XP is good. Windows Vista is crap. Windows 7 is good, and Windows 8 is crap, and so on. Two, it takes some time for any application developed on one OS to run smoothly on a newer OS. This is because the various bugs that appear due to compatibility differences need to actually be found and fixed, and this takes time and a lot of sifting through user bug reports.

My point is that anyone who is considering getting Windows 8 should hold off for now, and that anyone attempting to play EVE on a Win8 computer would probably have a lot less hassle if they rolled back to Win7. Win7 is new enough that most applications still support it, but old enough to where there has been plenty of time to find and fix compatibility issues with these. This is true for all applications not just the EVE client.

That said, I probably will have to take a day off of playing so I can get Win7 installed. It's going to take a while, I have to wait for my old laptop to finish being wiped so I can install it on there and use it as a backup/LAN file server for all of my files on this computer. Then I'll need to xfer, wipe, install, and xfer back. It'll probably take most of the night and that's if I decide not to take a break and sleep.

I have Windows 7 64 bit sitting in my disc drive but, to be honest, downgrading is a HUGE pain in the ass. I can't even get half the drivers I need for Windows 7 for this laptop. Luckily I can play EVE on my Windows 7 desktop at home still.

Oh yes, you are right. I haven't even started the actual downgrading part. Most of today has been spent pruning my files and folder s of unused or unwanted files, and then transferring the rest to my old laptop via ad hoc ethernet connection so that I'll still have them and can retrieve them later. That took almost 6 hours. Now I'm burning the ISO file for Win7 to a disc, while that's going on I'm making a final patrol of my usual internet hangouts, since I won't be online until after I finish the installation.

EDIT: As it so happens, the two problems I mentioned above also cropped up on Win7, however I have found solutions for them nonetheless.

1. If you exit EVE and your computer sceen looks like it OD'ed on shrooms, try playing in windowed or fixed window mode. So far the problem only occurs when I play fullscreen.

2. For those who are having issues with 3rd party voice comm software (Mumble, TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, etc) causing the EVE client to crash, try disabling overlays. I disabled Mumble's overlay and everything worked fine. It WAS a pain in the ass to minimize EVE any time I wanted to switch voice channels, but then I had the brilliant idea of hooking my laptop up to an external monitor and setting my display to "Extend Desktop", using the external as my main monitor and my laptop screen as secondary. Then I opened Mumble, moved it to my laptop screen, then opened EVE in Fixed Window mode on my main screen. Boom, no more problems, plus keeping EVE in Windowed mode kept my computer's graphics card from tripping. Two birds, one stone.

Of course this was all done in Win 7 but I don't see why it won't work for similar issues on Win 8 as well, that is if you're willing to try it.

It was known well before release, that Win8 is crap worse than Vista... What have you expected?

I was in the same situation as you, but I read the forums in some Depth, to gauge how compatible EVE would be with new operating systems and hardware. It may help if you posted or mailed me in depth details of your system so CCP, the community, or others with knowledge may help people using a technically "unofficial" operating system, and move this thread forward in a constructive manner. It would also help a ton to get any kind of feed back from ccp. Like hey guys, we reading this thread, and trying our best. tnx.

I been pretty much dead out of water since my new comp. It crashed twice on me during combat. Got 3 accounts that I can't use.

Really?

Every one using Win8 64P must be laughing right now, you clearly have no idea...

The problem is not Win8 whatever version, the problem is Eve.

I've been experiencing serious lock-up issues. They are random. When EVE locks, I can't end task the program no matter what and have to reboot. However, MOST of the freezes occur when I alt-tab out of the game.

Same problem except the way i fix it is by signing out of windows. Happens even if you don't alt tab out but not as often.

Have you tried running EVE in Windowed (Maximized) mode? A lot of games don't handle being put into the background, while full screen.

I had some major graphical lag problems. Basically my EvE client would freeze for minutes on end. All while, my system would be responding fine and task manager would report that the client was not using any resources.

I made a petition about this and sadly it closed before I could respond with what I found. In the end I have mostly fixed it by turning off the windows search indexing service. It would seem that the client was changing tonnes of files, and tonnes of tonnes of files when loading a new grid as most of my freezes were when loading a grid. (When not loading a grid, freezes would occur periodically.)

So somehow the indexing service caused my client to freeze.

@ Some people above

Metro interface IS NOT A PROBLEM, it's only something you can skip to recover you usual preferred start menu and window.

There is no problem at all when using this OS with almost everything else, actually and to be honest, my only big issues were with Eve.
Planetside2 full graphics "high" and "physical GPU" = no problem
Blacklight Retribution full "high", tessellation, directx11, flares etc = no problem

Now, let's make it clear. Some of these small issues while playing at eve are really annoying, if you guys thing the solution is to downgrade then CCP will never get fixes done so they improve their own stuff enough you don't have to xpcrap your stuff.

I have hard time understanding why at some point you guys absolutely think you should backpedal. I didn't and I will not, my first issues and you can see in this same thread in first pages, are almost completely gone.
Haven't tested yet in large fleet fights because I don't have that much time to play these days but I'm almost sure this thing can go on now with low graphic settings.

Just keep reporting your "shift" and be precise, major default here is not win8 and issues you can have with, is the lack of answers from CCP about our concerns. Talk with other guys using win8 and having 0 trouble no matter the fight type and realize these are issues happening randomly, same machine/OS one guy at US another Netherlands one can ply 6 accounts the other can barely play one, so the problem is somewhere else than OS it self.

I chose to upgrade from XP to Win 8 Pro (32 bit) when it was on offer, cost i think about £24. prior to upgrading Eve worked as well as can be expected, but after upgrading, the game tended to crash the whole PC, no real frequency to it, seemed totally random, sometimes run for half hour sometimes 10 mins. currently im back on XP again and its working fine, will probably wait for a service pack to be released for 8 before i try it again. Although more than tempted to get a copy of win 7/64 bit instead.

Hey guys, I wonder if anyone can help me?

I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8 and I'm trying to play EVE, however after installing the game from Steam, I was met with a launcher that closed itself down instantly. I then used the repair tool which took a long which but in the end it gave me an error saying it couldn't patch.

I've tried launching from steam, from the launcher, and the .exe itself and all I get now is an error message... Here's a screenshot

Does anyone know how I can get around this issue? I think I've run out of game time just trying to fix this.

I've searched the net and forums for the above solutions but I'm now out of ideas.

Any help would be much appreciate.

Having a problem when putting up the shading from medium to high, high makes the screen all a dense translucent blue and the shader detail or whatever it is called makes my game flicker when not disabled(One which has the option of disabled, low and high).

I was all good on my W8 machine until the nVidia 320.x drivers pwned my Shaders settings. Reading around it appears that the solution is to set ones shaders to Medium in order to resolve the image problem.

Shaders on High
and
Shaders on Medium

The system itself:
W8 Pro 64-Bit with Classic Shell installed to make it behave like Windows 7.
i7 3770
16GB DDR3 RAM
128GB OS SSD
2x 1TB Samsing 'Green' HDDs
Creative X-Fi Fatality Champ. Ed'n

2x Geforce 690 GTXs running 320 Beta drivers (I think that's where the problem lies).

EVE is run Fixed Windowed with all the settings turned to High (Normally) and the interleave set to 1 ingame and 2 in GeForce Settings.
