Yep, this is intended to replace the loading bars. Runs during the time taken for the client and server to resynchronise in the new system.

We also did a LOT of optimisation on how the client unloads and reloads assets on jumping. So not only is it pretty, it's less load :)

The new effect is nice and all, but during a long trip it sure seems like it would get disorienting and repetitive.

An option to turn it off (and replace with a simple black screen) would be very welcome. I also have some concerns about load time in high-lag situations, but too early to tell

Whaaaa...

You must not have seen the stream where they mentioned they actually got it loading smoother now? Or the comment from the dev.

first person (bridge/cockpit) dose not make sense for EVE when your supposed to be sealed away in the center of your ship in an egg.

A first person view dose not make sense as well because it reduces your situational awareness by forcing you to view only what is in front and to the sides of your ship. No view above, below, or behind.

if you want a first person view your just going to have to wait for star citizen or for CCP to develop the oculus rift demo into a full game.

I would like to see that demo developed into a full game. just sayin, it was AWSOME.

now THIS would be cool to take control of fighters but as far as going first person in current EVE ships (frigate, cruiser, battleship, etc.), my answer is an uncompromising loud NO.

That would be to big of a step away from what EVE is today and ruin the experience that EVE provides.

We are working on hooking this effect up to jump bridges, cynos etc. so they should have the same/very similar effect.
Wormholes will get their own effect as this effect doesn't fit for them.

Cheers

Dear CCP, please add lightning to the edges of the effect upon exit for cynoing in.

You know what I'm talking about.

there better be a way to disable this it will crash computers when jumping into busy systems

that would mean it would crash anyway with the old jump effect.

Yes exactly so get rid of all them all together.

what you are saying is that we should disable jumping at all?

The animations they cause all kinds of problems. Jump gate ones too.

That part is also taken care of.

A very quick exit animation is played as soon as the target system is loaded, most of the effect is played before you would previously get any fade to black and loading bars which may make it seem like the transition takes longer than before, but I assure you that's not the case. We realize that slowing down the jump transition is a big no-no.

The basic mechanics of jumping haven't changed so you will be just as safe/unsafe in your travels as before.

Cheers

Dont belive you, It sounds like your adding more useless visual cruft to a game that is already unstable at the best of times.

how much testing of this have you done?

have you tried jumping into systems with tons of players or large of battles going on?

The game has been fine for me during the last 2 years - no instability at all. You might want to try feeding the mice inside your PC...

Camera drones fly back to the ship and attach to the hull, looking forward. Makes perfect sense.

Nah, I'd look for the part were that idiot that gave me 100$ tries to scam me and think of ways to keep the 100$ and make him feel stupid at the same time.

EDIT: the complaining about how it's folded may be part of that tho.

Geeze Settle Petal. Could it be that maybe you're over reacting? If you experience lag jumping into a congested system then your graphics card isn't rendering the images fast enough. Or processor isn't up to the task..

EVE runs fine on low end machines but the best experience is always going to be with higher end equipment...ahem...

I've been playing EVE since 2009 and I have NEVER had an issue wtih my computer crashing. I was running EVE for 4 years on a computer from 2008, on Max settings and never had any issues jumping into busy systems.

Why dont you stop complaining and get a better PC.

I'll almost guarantee you it's using the normal in-game rendering engine rather than loading a pre-built video, so it should be seamless. If your system is that old perhaps you should upgrade?

Not everyone has the spare money to upgrade their computer to often perhaps?

I was still using an old celeron (p4) till about a year or so ago that I'd upgraded everywhere in the system I could. The bottleneck was the processor that I couldn't work around. Had that machine for about 5 years and finally got tired of poor performance from the games I played , etc and upgraded to a i3.

The loading bar is effected by the drive you use I believe. SSD vs a phsyical drive will make a world of difference.

Yes and no.

I suppose it's true to a degree. My own reaction to the animation was "Nice...and?" Because after all this is just an animation. They didn't really do anything earth-shattering. All they did was hide the loading bar, and show you an animation while the game still does same old stuff in the background. It's just eye candy, it's not even quality of life improvement. A placebo if you will. Some game developers tweak/change animations in their MMOs and it doesn't even end up in the bloody patch notes, never mind at a keynote presentation on a 10-year anniversary of the game's launch. Off the top of my head I can remember three MMOs where some major eye candy was added, and it was never even in patch notes because it was considered to be such a minor change as to not even be worth mentioning.

So, EVE players complain too much? As far as I'm concerned, they don't complain nearly enough. In fact, they're easily distracted by shiny objects. Ork crush, ork smash....oooh, shiney...

Nice write up. It might be eye candy yes but I'm sure you are aware that big changes often have small beginnings. Hopefully the visual change will lead to a faster server side change with the system session changes.
