EVE Online is a PVP game, so no matter where you are PVP can and WILL happen from time to time...its just the way the game works!

I have two accounts, this one 'Domo' for mining and another that I use for PVP. I been playing since early 2010 and have had my fair share of gank attempts (both made BY me, and against me) which I totally am fine with, and so should you!

If you want to not get insta-popped then put a little tank on your Retriever, here is what I do!

1. Fit a damage Control (Tech 2 pref.)
2. Fit the remaining 2 low slots with Reinforced Bulkheads, remember the DC2 gives 60% hull resists across the board which gives a nice chunk of Effective Hitpoints!
3. Dont use mining rigs, fit the shield extenders...they also add a nice bit of Effective HP!
4. If you have decent drone skills use a full flight of 5 Light ECM drones, if its a single attacker in something like a Catalyst or Thrasher, then the ECM drones can break his lock on you long enough for concord to show up! Now ECM drones are based of a 'chance' to lock out a targets tracking so dont expect them to work 100% every time...but if they work just once, well, that will definitely save your ship!

Now because you scream "My mining yield will drop heaps if I dont use mining rigs, mining drones and mining modules in the low slots"...let me ask you this:
"How much can your Retriever yield when its a wreck?"...NOTHING! So give up a little ore yield and in return gain a 'CHANCE' to survive!

Ofcourse if there are like 3 ppl trying to gank you then you are probably going to die no matter what you do lol! Just remember that EVE is a PVP-Oriented game, so PVP will happen, and you should expect it (heck, you should WELCOME IT, its awesome!)
