What makes the EVE player?

Hello General Discussion.

As we all know, the player community of Eve Online is the most intelligent, welcoming and newbie-friendly.

Well, I am not a newbie; In my five years of eve-ing I've seen pretty much it all. I was a wide-eyed newcomer, gasping "wow, this game world is HUGE!" before jumping into a bubble+instalock camp; I was a FW farmer and a pick-up fleet member, pressing F1 frantically at a random bracked sorted by name; I was an alliance drone, quietly doing my daily share of work; I bashed POSes; I refueled POSes; I AFK cloaked an un-probable Loki in your dead-end ratting haven; I sucide ganked Hulks and Mackinaws; I joined RvB and exploded for the lulz; I (*gasp*) even roleplayed a spaceship slaver barbie for a bit, only to understand that the EVE's RP community actually breaks more immersion than it creates.

Now, there is nothing left, but faint curiosity, and to satisfy that last desire, i turn to you, my dear colleagues, brothers and sisters in pixelated destruction, and it is to you that I address my last question.

As we all know, EVE's player community is inherently elitist. It preys on the tears of the weak or those who are perceived as such and weeds them out. By consuming the unworthy, the beast moves forward. But who are worthy and who are not? This is the question that I offer to you to answer.

What are the qualities that, in your opinion, make the "true" EVE player, one who is here to stay?

And what are the opposite, the signs of "WoW is that way -->"?

Thank you for your answers.
Always remember, that it is to you that CCP shapes their game.

you can identify eve players by looking at their cars. Since they don't drive what they can't afford to lose.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

Anyone, whether they enjoy PvE or PvP, who realizes that EVE is a competitive game where people will attempt to steal your stuff at every turn, whether by force, trickery, or honesty. If the thought of facing off against another human being in a competitive manner makes you cringe, you are not an EVE player.

CCP has no sense of humour.

What makes an Eve Player?

The ability to adapt and overcome. The patience to set long term goals, and accomplish them. The recognition that revenge is a dish best served cold. The commitment to actually learn the game and to play it before making half assed recommendations to "fix" it.

Everything else is fluff.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

I would deny this, except that it's true.

An EVE 'Lifer' has to have a fairly thick skin, or a high tollerance for harassment for those who's skin isn't so thick.
They have to have a philosophical ease with loss, and the willingness to suffer for future gain.
They need to be flexible and adaptable, but also willing to dig-in and hold their ground.
They need to be powerful forum warriors. Or at least not idiots.
Lol

NON-EVE survivors:
Anyone obsessed with 'fair play.'
Anyone who feels they're a 'special snowflake.'
Anyone who can't adapt.
Anyone who can't take a gank or a joke or a good podding.
Anyone who can't learn from a mistake.

What makes an "Eve player" is simply defined by time.

How long past the trial date expiration you place the arbitrary line is up to whoever is judging.

To put any more of a filter on it is a disservice to the game.

Determination and drive to set their own goals. Then seeking them out and attain them. Despite the fact that there are no guarantees of getting what they want. That's what makes a long term EVE player.

A true EVE player has...

- a certain level of love for the technical nature of things. The "devil is in the details" and EVE is almost nothing but details.

- patience. Lacking this a player will not last long in EVE because everything is MUCH more slow paced and/or tedious than other games. The skill system is the most obvious manifestation of this.

- a willingness to try something regardless of what you can and/or cannot do. You learn more about the game this way and can discover little nuances that guides and anecdotes fail to mention/prepare you for.

- have a certain degree of social skills. You don't need "good" ones (though, the better they are is easier it is to get to places that you would not be able to working solo) and they can mean the difference between being a target and being ignored.

- an understanding that the real world and game world are two very different things. "Conduct and behavior" in the real world do not always apply in a game and especially not the other way around.

- an understanding that one person's failure is another person's success. Likewise, something that ruins one person's experience in the game makes another person happy.

- knows they will never "win EVE" unless they do something no one else can or has done.

A "True" EvE player has no qualms with turning themselves into a Cockatrice for the third attempt that day, laying dozens of eggs to use as cannibalistic weapons, turning back, and then assuring themselves that, next time, they WILL remember to reequip their gloves whilst quietly preparing to do it all over again.

Donations of any doll items are graciously accepted anywhere in the universe of EvE!

EVE players are the scum of the universe and are bad in game and out. They think its ok to scam grandma out of her pension so they can play EVE for another month.

Looking to talk on VOIP with other EVE players? Are you new and need help with EVE (welfare) or looking for advice? Looking for adversarial debate with angry people?

The only thing that qualifies an EVE player as being a "true" EVE player is having an active subscription to the game.

Pretty much this. Though according to others in this thread, being a MMO stereotype is also one of the qualifications (there are very few things in this thread that don't also apply to every other MMO in existence).
