This one (Grumman XF5F "Skyrocket") tested well for performance as a carrier plane. But people just couldn't bear to look at it. It made them nervous.

I love Grumman. They always insisted that every plane be as unattractive as possible. One more: Grumman Duck. The poor thing has an odd growth on it. Check out the landing gear.

and the Germans called it the Fork Tailed Devil.

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said of the P-38. "Hey what are those dots in the distance? They are getting closer. Wow this plane is turning so sharply. Oh great I spilled my tea all over my uniform. I will definitely be filing a complaint against the maintenance crew this aircraft it is practically falling apart. What is all that racket outside anyway? Are we landing? I've never been on a plane that lands in a spiral vertical dive before. Those dots are a lot closer now, if only this plane would stop spinning I could see them straight. Oh hey a recognize them, they're American P-38's and... Crap! We're being shot down, that is what is happening. I am almost sure of it."

At least that is what I like to imagine he said.

Still rather fly that than this.

Nice, but I'll raise you conjoined twins.

North American Aviation sure did build some classics.

Well boss I don't know what we are gonna do. The General says that if we don't come up with an airplane that is twice as good as the P-51 we'll lose our Army Air Force contracts.

Don't worry I got this. Go get me some duct tape from the hanger.

Heh, this one was nice for a seaplane...

And this one also looked nice... on the water.Lol

But admittedly, seaplanes usually have it tough...

PS: to compensate, I was to post an image of one of the most beautiful seaplanes ever... but can't recall its name! Lol It was a light craft (4 pax), with a single propeller in pusher configuration, and the engine was mounted on a boom over the wing. A very elegant craft.

The A-40 and Be-200 say seaplanes can be modern and look halfway decent.

And the VTOL Fighter everyone forgets existed, the Yak-38. I think it looks cooler.

Blasphemy.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat is one of the most beautiful planes ever built.

The body with its front end chopped off due to use of radial engine are just not as sexy.

I like the Avro Vulcan as well, it's a monster to look at and the sound of the thing is mindblowing.

Hah I live just down the road from where most of that was shot. Bournemouth Airshow ftw.
