Gank advice needed

Just for background (in case you are interested) I posted this the other day:

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2942866#post2942866

At any rate, my question is, if I want to kill a retriever who's owner is AFK (i.e. a bot), would it be a good tactic to (attempt to) kill the light drones protecting the retriever? The logic being 1) they should be far easier to kill than the retriever, and 2) no drones for protection = eventual death by rats.

Has this ever been done? Is it effective? If so, what's a good, cheap setup to kill the drones? Also, what about smart bombs?

If it matters, this is 0.5 space, but the last time I attempted gank (see link above), concord responded in like 10 seconds or less.

Thanks.

unless 0.5 rats hit significantly harder than 0.7 rats, a retriever can tank those rats long after it's substantial cargo is full.

Killing to drones is not a very good way to kill a miner and chances are concord will whack you before you get themn all.

Best way is to scan the target and whack it in its resist hole.

^^^^ Or bring a friend or two.

Play EvE how you want to play it and do not let others dictate how you play. Evolve your playstyle to protect yourself from others! Even in "PVE", "PVP" is there, lurking in the shadows.

you'll get concordokkened for each of the drones, so just kill the host ship.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

You are overthinking it. Ignore the drones. Since you failed your gank earlier, figure out why you failed. It's just a retriever in 0.5, should be easy. Do the math. Go out there with a ship scanner and see what sort of tank he has fitted, plug it in EFT, then plug your catalyst fit in there and figure out your damage. Maybe you are fitting your Cat wrong. Best blasters you can fit in the high slots, best mag stabs you can fit in the lows. Having done the math, if there is any doubt in your mind whether you can take it, then either bring a friend or a higher-DPS ship.

As for CONCORD response time, it will be greater than 20 secs in 0.5 unless they are already spawned within 150 km of the target. Just to be sure, you can pre-spawn them. Fly an alt in a rookie ship and go shoot a customs office or something before your gank.

Well... I guess I should have been more specific. I know I could just bring my Naga down with 8 meta 4 blasters, and load up with antimatter or whatever, and gank the retriever. That's a no-brainer. But then I lose the naga. Since I'm not super-rich by any means, this kind of idea is out. It isn't worth it to me to do that.

I'd like to whack the thing on the cheap. That's why I suggested something like killing the drones. Hell, I figured a cheap frig (or a few), or a destroyer or whatever could do that. But honestly, I've never ganked anything, so what do I know?

Anyway, yeah, I guess I could scan the retriever and try to hit the resist hole. But honestly, if I'm going against this retriever (which is apparently tanked), it would probably take a cruiser at least to gank the thing before concord arrives?

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'd just like to punish a bot miner is all :-)

I recently saw a guy bragging how he was ganking 30 million isk retreiver with a 50 million isk hurricane.

I mean with that kind of gank power its hard to fail, but your doing it at a loss.

Looking to talk on VOIP with other EVE players? Are you new and need help with EVE (welfare) or looking for advice? Looking for adversarial debate with angry people?

Catalyst... fit with neutron blasters (with 10 rounds of faction ammo per gun), magnetic field stabilizers in the lows (as many as you can fit), a hybrid collision accelerator rig (they're dirt cheap), and whatever you feel is necessary.

Warp in on top of the person, overload your weapons (if you can), and you have a dead mining barge. If THAT fails then get someone else in the same setup and try again.

Wait for a Rat to tank the drones. While they are busy, do a quick kill on the main ship while the drones are buzzing at the Rat

Bring 15-20 rounds, probably 20, in 0.5 space. You really don't want to run out of ammo when you gank.

And for goodness sake, use a Catalyst.

Learn t2 small blasters, t2 sebos, weapon upgrades, and Thermodynamics.

Catalyst:

T2 blasters, ( Void ammo, about 20 rounds in each gun ) in high.

Two t2 Sebos, with scan res scripts. in mid.

three t2 Mag field stabilizers in low.

A hybrid burst aerator, and Hybrid collision accelerator rigs.

Be sure the sebos are going, and that you overheat blasters before you hit. You should be able to nuke any Retriever with that, except a bait ship. And have time to lock up the pod and kill it in 0.5 space.

Mate, In .5 a lone t2 fit catty can kill a retriever with only a few weeks of training. If you want some good advice feel free to eve mail me.

I am just here to snuggle and do spy stuff.
