No drones?

I have a T-1 Minmatar probe that can fit drone. I trained for the T-2 Cheetah, and discovered it had NO drone capacity. WTF? How is it supposed to defend itself, and why is it weaker than its T-1 counterpart?

Perhaps you should go back and read the descriptions of the two different ships before you post on the forums complaining they aren't the same?

I have deliberately developed an air of cynicism that I originally intended to make me appear somewhat louche and caddish but actually comes across as irritable hostility combined with the unspoken threat of sudden violence.....

should every ship be able to defend itself?

Not every ship can do everything. You have to take into account what you want the ship to do vs. what it's actually good at doing.

The Probe/Cheetah are exploration ships, and are comparatively less 'punchy' than the harder combat frigates. The Rifter/Jaguar are better suited for a combat role.

For the record, I swear by the Jaguar. I'm a lousy combat pilot, but the Jag is a beast if it's properly fit.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

Funny.
I did read the description before I posted on the forum. My point was that i didn't realize the T-2 variant would have less defense than the T-1. The question was rhetorical.

In EVE, defending oneself doesn't always mean shooting back

...as shocking as that is for some people to understand

CCP is working on rebalancing Tech 1 ships right now. They haven't gotten around to any of the Tech 2 ships yet.

Also... the Cheetah can cloak... which is far more defense than 4 drones can provide.

hull types

t1 - standard
t2 - specialized (removing functionality in some areas for vastly increased functionality in others)
t3 - generalized (can be reconfigured for different role but should not out perform t2 in specialized roles, well at least after all the rebalancing is done )
faction/navy - improved over t1 stats for a price

the cheetah is a t2 ship, its a specialized version of a t1 ship (probe) and maximized some of its abilites at the cost of others.
covert ops frigs such as the cheetah are intended to sneak around cloaked scaning out the enemy and are intented to be quite easy to kill should they be foolish enough to find themselves in combat. also as said above the ability to warp around with your cloak on is just about the best defence you can have

Because the Probe (and all T1 ships up to BC) have already been updated during the ongoing tiercide.

The T2 ships havent.
Do research before starting a whine thread. Saves me the mess of thinking I'm dealing with a stupid/lazy (choose which one applies to you) pilot.

Sometimes the truth hurts.

T1 ships are general purpose ships.

T2 ships are specialized ships. They excel in their task but suck at others.

In your case...The Cheetah will excel in probing stuff. Then it's either reship into another ship that is good at the task at hand or have friends ready to warp to you so they can do the fighting.

If your question was rhetorical and you didn't want people to answer it then what's the point of this post?

Then why waste our time with some stupid whine thread. I rather help people with good attitude over those who whine about how their ship can't do everything.

If your original question was rhetorical, doesn't that make this thread pointless?

Because if you engage someone in a Cheetah, you're doing it wrong. The ship is not meant for combat. The Cov Ops cloaking device is a hell of a lot better defense than a single light drone.

Why do you think that t2 stuff is just "t1 but better in every way"?

Anywho, to actually answer the question. The Cheetah has the magical ability to fit a cloak, which means you don't have to defend yourself because you're supposed to be hidden.

If you can't stay hidden.. well, Darwinism.

Really. Not really something you would want known I would think.

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.
