Whats the use of being SOBER?? When you are gonna get drunk... again

Seriously... why

When I'm drunk , I get elated over the simplest things.
I get excited over buying a Machariel in EvE , over an airsoft rifle , over the simplest things .
But when I'm not...
The fun kind of just drains away.
I start asking myself..
"Do I really need that?"
"Is it really as fun as you'll hope?"
Then I started doing research and stuff and end up finding the stuff I previously wanted to be absolute pants .

Sobriety is required for those like me who can't make themselves stop once they start drinking. It's a primarily genetic disease called alcoholism. Tends to skip a generation. My grandfather was one too. His solution was to become a Baptist preacher, as there was nothing for it back then. Now there is rehab and AA at least.


Edit: the number who stay sober after treatment, even for 5 years is astonishingly low.

Honestly, I don't get drunk. I *used* to - but I missed too much when I got drunk. Not blacking out (though I did that - once. Once was more than enough!), but simple loss of attention to detail. Don't like that.

Alcohol is a ritual thing, a time of contemplation and pleasure in the consumption; the effects of excess detract from that. A simple 'buzz' is plenty. I drink so little these days that it takes very little to get me that buzz - which means I have more $$ to spend on drinking quality alcohol (See the Single Malts in Space thread).



(Just dropped a hundred dollars on two cases of Dogfish Head's ApriHops IPA, which I expect will last me six months (and a good thing, too - it's a seasonal), but that's fine 'cause it's really good and I'll drink maybe two a week.)

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

It's hard, I know. My step mother and adopted brother are both recovering alcoholics. My brother is drinking again, after twenty years of sobriety. Though he hasn't started drinking beyond a level what most folks would call 'light', it's still 100% more than he should be drinking. It worries me, but he's far away, and I'm not in position to intervene.

For us alcoholics: One is too many and a thousand is never enough.

It's why I really wish "green herbage" was legal in US. Non-addictive and does not cause the nearly the physical damage that excessive alcohol does that one can actually feel.

I used to be the sole drinker in a dry biker group. They'd tell me stories of their exploits and I realized that I never ever made it past the Amateur stage. Those guys were pros. I do drink but rarely to excess anymore. Getting too old for that. Your "green herbage" makes me violently ill. So I never got into that at all.

Now, if I could just give up the Marlboros.....

Had a best friend/room mate that was that way. If there was one beer in the house, he drank one. If there was six, he'd drink six. If there was a case, .....

Well, I actually need it now for a medical reason, which of course was not an issue when I lived in San Francisco. It's been problematic obtaining descent quality here in Florida.

Yeah, it's bad for the lungs, but it's not like one smokes 20 a day like cigarettes. Quite a bit less indeed. And interesting how I've never had a problem stopping it when I have to, but cigarettes are truly another story.

Well, I actually need it now for a medical reason, which of course was not an issue when I lived in San Francisco. It's been problematic obtaining descent quality here in Florida.

It's not physiologically addictive - Nicotine is horrifically addictive, though.

I don't drink anywhere as near as I did in the Navy. Back in the Nav, it seemed like the only time I was sober was when we were underway.

Now, I'm more of a social drinker. Usually family gatherings like a party or something. It's no fun drinking alone, as there is no one to talk **** with all night long.

Then there is the history of alcoholism in my mother's family that I want to change. So now, I drink only when I feel like I want one, and not when I need one.

I also avoid smoking as much as possible. I quit smoking not because it was bad for me, but because they cost so much. There is also the benefit of being healthier and living a longer life for both my wife and kid. I would like to see her graduate high school, college, and someday, give her away at her wedding.

After seeing the bill for her "dream" wedding, I'll probably need to be drunk for a few days to get over the pain. P

Surrender is still your slightly less painful option.

That's great. But considering you do not have a problem yet, you are probably not predisposed to it yourself. You would already have had issues, lost jobs, etc, etc.

Too much pay spent on bad beer. Big smile

Even then, I didn't drink nearly as hard as my fellows. Maybe 'cause I've been able to buy since I was 15, and quickly got past the 'alcohol is cool' stage. I was a pretty LARGE teen - easily passing for adult, especially with heavy facial hair at 15. I got invited to all the parties, 'cause I could buy. Alcohol grew to be something that was a social lever, not something to be enjoyed. Took a lot of the fun out of getting drunk.

Drinking to extreme excess while in the Nav, passing out a few times, puking my guts up many times, and learning to hate being sick from alcohol in general taught me a valuable lesson to not go overboard.

My wife was a heavy drinker and party girl back when I first met her. She rarely drinks anything now.

We both have responsibilities and alcohol in general just gets in the way.

Alcohol now is to be enjoyed around family and friends. Probably why we get the expensive good stuff that lasts for a few months.

Surrender is still your slightly less painful option.

Have a little too much at the first bar, get kicked out.

Hit the second bar on the right. Drink too much, start a fight, get kicked out.

Rinse and repeat.

The more buddies you have, the more fun. Never left the boat in a foreign country without a group of 6ish of my fellow nukes. Or a few of our favorite conners.

If I knew then what I know now.... I'd have saved all that money I spent on beer, cheap booze, and floozies.

People are always amazed when I tell them I don't drink Alchohol. Then they retort with Tea jokes and I tell them I don't drink warm beverages either. And yes, that includes no Hot Chocolate. I'm a monster, I know.

I don't smoke either. Some people wonder how I stay sane. I question something else entirely.
