Raising Sec Status and Ship vs Ship

Hello,

I am a returning player... haven't played in awhile. I've decided to take another hard look at EVE and try and stick with it. A few years ago I joined a piracy corp and helped in one kill where I earned myself a -3.4 sec status... ever since then, I've been trying to raise it.

Last time I played, I was using a Ferox with some sort of expensive setup to travel around ~0.2-0.5 system in search of battleship rats to kill. I was doing fine until eventually I went through a gate only to find some gate campers... I tried to escape as quickly as possible but my ship blew up... once that happened, I had the daunting task of trying to buy all the stuff I needed again... I decided I didn't want to play anymore. I know the motto, "Don't fly what you can't afford"

My first question: Is ratting still the best way to gain sec status? I think right now I'm at -2.1.
Second question: What's the smallest/cheapest ship I could fly in order to take out battleships? Could I use a fast Rifter and take out a battleship? I really need help in this area. (What is really good against what?)

I haven't done much in EVE at all and decided I need to find some friends and try to have fun. I'm interested in piloting a fast ship and exploring the universe... worm holes, etc... planetary mining also intrigues me... however, first I'd like to raise my sec status back up to 0.

Thanks

Ratting is the ONLY way to gain sec status. You had the pan right- kill the biggest rat you can find, then force a session change (jump/dock). Sec status is only updated based on the largest bounty killed in the last 15 minutes, so the session change avoids the timer.

A stealth bomber is your ideal ship for this. Fit range extending rigs, a MWD, and a target painter- snipe your rats dead from 60km, use the MWD to defeat their tracking, and covops cloak to avoid gatecamps.

Yes, ratting in a .1, .2 system will raise your sec status quite fast. Your 'biggest' kill per system every 15 minutes determines how much sec status you gain. So kill a BS in one system and move to another, coming back to the first only after 15 mins.

A solo rifter is going to have a hard time killing a BS. If you don't want to fly a BS yourself, you may look into stealth bombers. You could also try Tier 3 Battle-cruisers, as they fit large guns, but these aren't very tanky...

While training to fly a stealth bomber (the "best" anti-BS ratting ship in the game, according to some people), I used to fly around lowsec in a T1-fit Thrasher and pick on the stuff I'd find. A Thrasher, assuming you keep up your transversal, can get under the guns of the battleship and slowly pick it apart. It'll also kill any smaller ships, too. ;)

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. …"

By Stealth Bomber do you all mean a Covert Ops ship? Avoiding a gate camp would be ideal! :)

Stealth bombers are filed under "Covert ops" in the market but for all intents and purposes they are a separate class of ship. If you say "Covert ops", you're referring to the probing ship.

Killing NPC Pirates is the ONLY way to gain security status.

So, yes, Ratting is still the only way to gain it fast (mission running is the other one, but it's slower).

Make a loop of null-sec systems that takes you about 15min to complete, then in each system shoot 1 battleship and move to the next.

As for ships...stealth bombers.

They can cloak to keep you safe when people enter system. And their BS sized guns do work pretty good against battleships.

An SB is a covert-ops style cloaking frigate that is armed with torpedo launchers and a unique bomb launcher. The bomb is a pvp weapon so no need to worry about it for ratting. The Minmatar version is the Hound.

They are extremely flimsy, but do very high DPS vs large targets (thanks to the torpedoes) and are invisible. This makes them perfect for what you're trying to. Also, they are lots of fun in pvp as well so you'll never regret training for them Twisted

An option you might consider is contacting a Providence diplomat and finding if you are 'Kill on Sight' in the nullsec region of Providence, or if you are a neutral who will not be attacked by the residents of Provi.

While I am personally kill-on-sight in Provi, I think if you arent it's safer to rat there as a neutral than in most other parts of null.

There is a chat channel called 'P-Trade' that Im banned from (something about KoS people gathering intel) that might be able to help more, or look up sov-holding corps in Providence and see if they have a public channel.

Note "standings" in Providence wont help you against Not-Blue-Shoot-It Providence non-residents like, well, me.
