Enlighten is not used in FiS, only in WiS / Dust 514 (which is probably part of what made WiS so unkind to graphics cards).

Oh. That's too bad! Well, whatever lighting model Trinity is using, it's used to great effect since the lighting in EVE is some of the best I've seen.

While the lighting can certainly play a role in how demanding Carbon can be, there are a lot of unoptimized elements in its code, and that probably plays a larger role in it being so stressful on GPUs than anything else. The new lighting effects that Incarna will be receiving this Winter don't really affect performance for me (the effects were present in the Duality and Singularity builds that had the other three CQs), but this could be due to some optimization of the Carbon builds on those servers.

Unfortunately CCP Navigator just stated that the Crow model is player made, not a CCP product. Sad

.... well thats kinda worrying that a player can do a better job than the folks payed to do this stuff O_O

i guess they should hire the guy and MAKE it a CCP product

The crepuscular rays that occur in Incursion territory should also be made available to every system. Those definitely increase the atmosphere of the game by giving a sense of volume to the space you travel in.

If these are used in every system they should be limited to only appearing in asteroid belts and other dusty environments.

Edit:

I have to disagree with this. Lighting in EVE is static. Long ago we used to see our weapons' discharge light up ships and other objects around us. Not anymore.

I remember during last fanfest it was mentioned that CCP wanted to introduce more complex lighting for FIS, so that there would be multiple lights acting in the environment in a more realistic way. For example if you were over a planet, the planet would illuminate the side of your ship, that kind of thing.

Sounded pretty exciting but I got the impression that tech was a while off. Shame really, lighting is an extremely important part of the visuals and could be used to great effect in EVE.

Are the new nebulae rendered in 3D? As in, they will look different when approaching them from different directions, and not just grow bigger or smaller with varying distances.

If so, it will complete my 'ooooohhhh' and 'ahhhhhh' for the day Big smile

If you approach Jita from four different directions over a long enough distance - yes.

When you are in Jita, approaching different gates within the system will NOT yield a different background image.

They are updating the backgrounds, not the way the backgrounds are rendered - they are still going to be 'boxes', just jaw-droppingly beautiful and specific to the system you are in.

I believe the company that were hired to create the backdrops is framestore

For areas like that, I think a soft particle effect and color grading could go a long way in tandem with crepuscular rays. Ice fields could give a star's light a shade of blue, and veldspar could give a shade of brown/orange. Color grading can be changed depending on a field's contents. Furthermore, a soft particle effect could be given volumetric and light scattering properties to reflect a turret's effects. The result would be really cool looking.

Just because lighting is static doesn't mean it can't look good. Take RAGE for example. Environment lighting in that game is static, but each area is beautifully lit. (Play this game if you haven't done so already!)

Your second point is agreeable. Turret effects definitely should have some lighting effects on the ships they're equipped to as well as their ship's surroundings.

I hope the background in my wormhole system changes. Right now it looks like the whole system is full of orange smoke Ugh

A method that wasn't mentioned yet was the skyboxes could be streamed off of a server as needed and cached with the client.

What I am wondering is this: CCP, will you be realigning the stargates? The problem is, they all point south! This is going to be glaringly obvious once there are external reference points. You'll be traveling north and each time you jump you'll get shot south.

+1 to using the inverse square law (or whatever is artistically suitable) for ambient lighting. This should also drown out the nebula's relative intensity when the scene is bright.

While we are on the topic of graphics, gas giant rings needs to cast shadows.

If that is really the new Raven model they are going with then I am dissapointed. Biggest problem with the Raven is that it looks like a deformed bird with only half a wing on one side. CCP seems to think that the Raven is some iconic symbol of EvE...it is...Iconic of how crappy some of the ships can look. Oh well...I stopped flying it long ago anyway.

New nebulae looks awesome!

Could we have a nebulae view/tab in the map window? literally learn to navigate by the stars lol. also it would look AWESOME!

edit: for example... open map, i am....here, i need to go to where the red nebulae looks like a sideways pineapple

No Worries

We've been talking a bit about that in this thread... given the pizza box analogy about how they made this possible (see the dev vid and fanfest vid), I'm not sure it would be such a small task... since this seems like a 2D solution in its current implementation. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on that...

would devinately be cool to do though...

Someday....
