New York Times 'No Likey'..........

Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford........these guys need to realize that age is becoming a reality, and need to be phasing in to different kinds of roles at this point. Their presence anymore can make a film seem a bit awkward.

The new Rob Zombie film is getting better reviews. Still, I'm more excited about Blomkamp's "Elysium".

Honestly im not surprised.

After seeing the trailers I've been unimpressed with it, and the Will Smith movie coming out too. Elysium is my favourite in the pack for this summer.

I didn't see the trailers, I think that's a key part at play here. I didn't know if it was action or romance, thriller or political spiel.

From that reference point, the story unfolded well, and while my friends who had seen the trailers were waiting for events to happen... this ruined it for them I think. In retrospect my favorite films have all been ones I went into with absolutely no preconceptions, Robocop for one.

The trailers show all of the main plot points unfortunately.

I would have thought the bad economy would have raped up the quantity of happy films, but a kick back into your step somewhat.

One would think Hollywood would go for the smell of money.....and 'happier SF' always performs much better, sometimes ridiculously so: "Star Wars" "Avatar" etc.


Edit: I idiotically left out the 'Star Trek's. But even the new Trek Film depicts imagery similar to these broken Earth films. It's getting old.

Ain't that the truth when one finally is old enough to realize it ? It can happen though, after a fashion, but that's the rare life.

Frankly, I never listen to film reviewers when it comes to films. I believe that these professional film reviewers have fallen far from the average moviegoer, and actually believe themselves to bo some kind of elitest or connoisseur. They know their reviews tend to influence how the public percieves the film. I have seen many films where the reviewers skewered the films, touting them as absolute garbage, and I ended up not watching them in theaters, only to rent them when they did come out and regret not seeing them ont he big screen.

Some sites where they have actual peoples reactions and thoughts on the films are much more helpful. Alot of the times you will find reviews by the average joe who is a fan of that specific genre, and he will tell it to you straight. Reading reviews this way has actually made me want to see a movie that I didnt think would be worth it when I watched the trailer.

That being said, I will probably go watch Oblivion this weekend.

I hope the twist at the end is Tom Cruise's character finds out that he is a clone....of Tom Cruise.

Yeah that was my thread, and it's totally true. Some film subjects just seem to be the flavor of the year.

Very much looking forward to Elysium. I enjoyed Oblivion, but I think Elysium could possibly turn out to be the best sci-fi released this year. Only saw a flash of Sharlto Copley in the trailer, I enjoyed his performance in D9 immensely and am glad to see him back in another sci-fi film.

I think After Earth might bomb... I'll watch it but I'm cautious given Shymalan's duds these past few years. Even if it's terribad, Will Smith in it should guarantee it'll at least break even at the box office.

Oblivion wasn't bad, I thought the contrast between the aesthetics of the technology, and living quarters of the main character, and a wasteland earth were quite effective.
