Also watching footage now of the national guard.

All I have to say is this.... when the hell did the American soldier get so.... big? Shocked Theres quite a number of double chins among them.

National Guard. Not exactly the every-day PT kind of guys.

Alright I'll grant you that. But I was a reservist for nearly 2 years and still had to keep the same level of fitness I had when I was on full duty.

The Boston SWAT seem to be quite chunky too.

People used to mock me for having a 34" waist. But I'm 6' 3". Some of these guys must be pushing 40"+

Reserves =! National Guard

Reserves are still a Federal formation, not a State formation which can be Federalized at-need. There's a reason Guard units are sent to REFTRA before shipping out... and it's isn't all about re-familiarization. Roll

SWAT team? They only have to be fit enough to do their job - no 20 mile ruck-humps for them. Nor should there be, really.

Bah I say!

It doesnt reflect well is all I'm saying.

Then again we have no concept of national guard here. Its all reserves or active service. But we're the size of New Jersey so its not an issue.

According to WHDH looks like the search is moving to Conneticut and police are looking for a green honda civic.

The thing is, National Guard, for the most part, are POGs. They aren't going to be the most fit to begin with in that capacity. Then you have the fact they're weekend warriors, and it all just disappears. I've been training a New Hampshire unit about to deploy to Afghanistan. I had to haze them for a week straight in order to get them into a routine.

Leadership is something you learn. Maybe one day, you'll learn that.

Well, true.
OTOH, when engaged, they can lay down some serious hurt. Nothing wrong with their ability to rock-n-roll, when it comes down to the moment.

Also - What Anya said.
Hated having drilling reservists on-board. By the time you get them up to speed and being useful, they're gone again. Yes, I know - that's the whole point. They're not supposed to be free labor, they're suppsed to keep an edge on. Once you've put an edge on 'em, the job is done, and they go back in the box.

Here being reserve means you have a 9-5 but still drill 2 weekends a month, on top of any extra duty you can be lumped with in times of crisis. Which is er.... pretty much always.

Seems the lockdown is starting to grate with peoples nerves.

"1942: Michael, Belmont MA emails: Starting to think this lockdown may continue for quite some time yet. The scene is surreal in the day light. It's going to get very spooky at night when there's nothing on the roads and the constant blue flash of police lights."

Our Reservists normally drill one weekend a month, plus two contiguous weeks a year. That's about enough to keep a coarse edge on, not to keep 'em at full fighting trim.

The Guard has a simiilar schedule, but is more of a civil defesne force with military capabilities than a military force with civil defense capabilities, if you get my drift.

The majority of Guard calls-out are for things like storm cleanup, flooding, etc. Indeed, the Guard barely played any role in Desert Storm because so many units had been gutted by corruption or apathy. Some few units were ready to go, most were not. That got FULL the attention of the Army IG, and when Iraqi Freedom came along, things were much better - and a number of people had been relieved for cause, or retired involuntarily, or had gone to prison.

The Watertown search is only about 70% done yet - hence the extention.

If you want an idea of the goegraphic spread of last night's festivities, look here:
http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/04/us/boston-marathon-terror-attack/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

Seeing the complicated sequence gives you a better idea of how the police were being whip-sawed about and over how large a geographic region. At each instance, a new time-lag is inserted as the report is assimilated, understood, directions issued, and responses undertaken. As long as the suspects were moving fast, police had no time to catch up - they were, through no fault of their own, 'behind the eightball' most of the early part of the night.

I haven't been keeping up for the last 4 pages because you guys starting going into other territories, but I see that ones down and the other is still being hunted.

I'm posting though because I can't help but notice msn's conspiracy theory title to one of their articles:

Bombing suspect on the run became US citizen last year on Sept. 11

Is that really even important information? Also is it me that is perhaps reading into that too much?

Edit: By the way, I read that article earlier and it originally was titled something like: Uncle wanted them away from family.

It makes a good story. I dont want to read too much into it, down that way madness lies.

Im sure their pc hds will reveal all kinds of stuff for conspiracy nuts to go crazy over.

let's just say perfect PT scores are exceptional even in active duty units.

at one point in 2011, half the Army was in non-deployable medical status.

Yeah, it's a teaser headline, to entice views with irrelevent information. We discussed it briefly a couple pages ago, and my basic take on it is "So what? Sept 11, Dec 7, and July 4 are all popular days for swearing-in."

We have wandered about a bit, as the immediacy of the action is taking a backseat to the slower, methodical process now on-going.

If I'd have been SecDef, I'd have been out kicking asses 12 hours a day (that's how to get your PT done!).

Well, this exactly.

Tin Foil Hat: Event is thus 'extended' to see if a "Lockdown Experiment" would actually work. (They needed an excuse).

Lockdown Experiment

This is a joke, right?

A friend of mine said.. "It's simple, one doesn't leave if one is not finished. That's why they didn't leave, I suspect the story is just warming up. I hope I'm wrong."

Residents in and around Boston have heard explosions. Suspect 1 has wounds that are believed to be result of explosives. They had that innocent guy strip down for a reason. Information the carjacked guy provided. One dead cop.. another seriously injured. Explosives. High velocity shrapnel type explosives have been used by these suspects.

This isn't the 'norm' and shouldn't be treated like it is. Many more people are going to be happy about a lockdown that protects them.. rather than let them out and about, exposed to potential explosions.. I repeat BOMBS. Let alone gun fire. Come on, man. Not too mention how much easier it would be to locate this terrorist under these conditions. Some one who stuck around in the city, perhaps for a reason to do more.. given they had more explosives.

Lockdown Experiment and magical helicopters. Holy hell....

Fear. The Media does a really good job of promoting fear.. this is why many governments/law enforcement agencies do not give out certain information. It would promote additional Fear. On top of this.. you got the conspiracy theorist adding fuel to the fire with additional fear-promoting fodder by flinging the evil government and the biased news organizations.. into the mix. Everyone else is to blame for all this anarchy.. special butterfly is safe in mental cocoon weaved by truths of an untethered mind set free of oppression. BLAH! How are you any different than the media flinging words out, with no crediable backing?

Conspiracy theories leads to fear.. leads to blame.. leads to.. 'something drastic needs to be done about this...'

Stop promoting Terror or this bullshit will never, ever end. Bring real substance in a civil manner, please people. I will say.. I'm surprised how civil and relaxed this thread has stayed over 14 pages.

there was a crackdown on unit-level issued profiles

I saw it as an issue of people not having overcome discomfort.

break through the mental pain barrier and that's when things start happening.. for the better, I mean. physical capabilities-wise.

I used to tell privates that "pain is just a check engine light [ignore it like I know you do on your car]."

* Evil special interests.
* Aliens.

By the way it is never one of those per event, there is a version of each for every one. If you don't believe it you are sheep or sheeple or in their evil pocket or just don't "get it".

I get that there are some conspiracies in the world, I know of quite a few proven ones like MKUltra and the Business Plot. I am sure their are a few going on right now but everything that happens is always blamed on some super global web filled with thousands of conspirators plotting the over throw of governments and have plans to turn the world into that torture state from 1984.

Just once I would like something big to happen and everyone be like "Wow that is obviously exactly what happened. I've taken the time to look over all the evidence and it seems obvious that, that is what happened."

I don't even need to try and prove it right, it just is.
