estimating ship requirements for specific targets

Having been reading on the forums for a while, I am confident that I understand what is needed to take down a Hulk or other mining vessel. That one should be pretty simple.

However I'm interested in what information people consider when they have a specific target (ship) they want to take out.

I'd love to get advice on how to take down a Crow in low-sec, but something like that would be different than taking down a Proteus, or an Abaddon.

What are the determining factors, if any, that should be looked at in order to put together a solid fit to take out a given target?
Is knowing the modules and ammunition choice of the target pilot crucial to the overall task? Are kill-boards like battle clinic a good location to gather this data?

Against a specific target? Stats that matters the most to me are the ship's bonus(es) as it's what the pilot will most likely gravitate around.

On killboard sites, altho they never tell the whole story, knowing your mark's favourite ships and weapons used is valuable.

What it comes down to is that battle experiences and knowledge is where it's at. Well, duh, I mean show info and studying stats on ~things~ will get you so far but different pilots have different skill levels and mind sets. etc.

It knows what you think.

The determining factor of what can take what out on a 1-vs-1 for me is what will engage what. The bare knowledge is irrelevant, since most X that can take out Y, will rarely get Y to engage.

The trick is to have a ship that can take out another specific ship (or class of ships) while it looks like it can *not* take out that ship(s).

I.e. the determining factor is looking defeatable while not being it

The simple answer is experience...

To understand how to kill a ship you need to understand the ship.

Understanding the pilot is secondary to understanding the ship.

If I want to kill a crow, I can be pretty confident the same tactics and fitting will work with 95% of the crow pilots out there. It's only at a more advanced level that you can gain enough knowledge from quick glance at battleclinic and gain a further advantage.

I cover this in a video on my website called "win before you fight" which is located here: http://www.eveproguides.com/win-before-you-fight-learn-pvp-lesson/

A great way to learn about ships is find the popular fits for them then play around with them in EFT.

As for how I would kill a crow... I would use a dual prop taranis, arty thrasher, 425mm tracking cane, claw, or a number of other ships. The basic idea is to either get a scram on him and then kill him or to drop him so fast that you don't need the scram (arty thrasher and tracking cane).

Experience makes sense. That one applies in many situations through life.

Thanks for the info.

EFT will give you a general idea but if you're really interested in knowing what works then you need to test it. For that, we use SISI. For example, when fighting a certain enemy in the past we used SISI to test out how many bombers it would take to blow up one of their hellcat fleets. The initial calculations were made in eft and then we used SISI to dial it in accounting for losses, mistakes and what-not, at which point we had a number we could use that number to try it in game.
