First of all, my apologies, I had meant to get this announcement out sooner, but an unfortunate run-in with some leftovers that were obviously too left over took me out of commission last night.

The entire SCL staff met over the weekend after spending some time revisiting SCL #2 and our plans for the future, and have opted to make some changes and enhancements for the coming tournament.

Rules and Format Changes

As this is more my domain, I'll start by addressing the rules and format changes. Our original rules can be found on the SCL tournament site, but we have not yet updated the Rules page to reflect our changes. The changes are listed below--note that these are subject to change if CCP releases the next iteration of ship balancing changes on Sisi between now and May 11.

First off, due to popular demand, we will be including a match to determine the third place winners.

Secondly, we are altering the fight schedule to both reduce downtime for viewers and increase time between rounds for team captains. We will be alternating matches such that Match 2, Round 1 will follow Match 1, Round 1 and they will continue to alternate back and forth in this fashion. If you think of the first level of a bracket as Matches A, B, C, and D, we will see A1, B1, A2, B2, A3, B3, then C1, D1, etc. The goal here is to give the team captains a bit more breathing room between matches and time to fine-tune their setups and last minute changes to their strategies, hopefully enabling even better competition and creativity from the teams. For scheduling purposes, we will allocate a full 10 minutes into the schedule for each fight to ensure that all captains have a uniform amount of time between rounds regardless of the match outcomes.

As for the specific match rules:

Teams will be limited to TWO (2) of a given shiptype. This applies to specifically named ships only, and not ship hulls. For example, 2 Merlins, 2 Hawks, and 2 Harpies would be legal.

Only one Remote Energy Transfer module may be fitted per ship. They may be fitted on any and all ships, but only ONE per ship is allowed.

The following are the modified point values for the ships we have altered--note that BS values are subject to change based on the Sisi version:

  • Pirate Faction Battleships remain at 20 points
  • Marauder - 19 (this is +1 from SCL 2)
  • Empire Faction Battleships - 18 (this is -2 as they were originally tiered with the Pirate battleships)
  • Black Ops and Tech 1 Battleships remain at 17 points

  • Heavy Interdictor - 11 (this is -1 from SCL 2)
  • Stealth Bombers - 5 (-1 from SCL 2)
  • Electronic Attack Frigates - 4 (-1 from SCL 2)
  • Electronic Warfare Tech 1 Frigates - 3 (+1 from SCL 2)*

  • *This includes the Vigil, Crucifier, Maulus and Griffin

We will also be allowing Pirate Faction Rookie Frigates for 2 points and vanilla Rookie Frigates for 1 point each.

We look forward to seeing how these changes shake up the meta and keep things new and exciting both for the competitors and the viewers, and as with last time we will be closely monitoring the statistics from the weekend to see what further fine tuning or other alterations we can make to continue to challenge our teams.

Moving on, we aim to hold the SCL on a roughly monthly basis, but will remain flexible to work around events such as Fanfest, the EVE NEO or AT, and holidays. This time there will ultimately wind up being 5 weeks between SCL 2 and 3, and we feel that this is a comfortable amount of time for all involved.

Sponsorship and Advertising

We have worked out a new pricing structure for our sponsors, allowing them to select the one that best suits their budget and gives them the most bang for their buck. In addition, we are opening an invitation to players, corporations and alliances that wish to put out their own 15 second videos and have them aired. The rate will be 1 billion isk per 15 second spot, and the SCL reserves the right to decline videos based on content deemed offensive, poor quality, or otherwise detrimental to the quality and integrity of the SCL. Interested parties can contact Seldarine for more details. Isk from all types of sponsors will be put towards ensuring prizes are paid out to the teams (and paying off the debts we incurred last weekend!).

All isk transactions will now take place using the Syndicate Competitive League Inc. [SYNCL] corporation wallet. Be sure to match that exactly, and note that the current CEO is Bob Booley.

Commentary

Ever considered being a commentator? Think you have what it takes? The SCL staff is looking for one more voice to bring on board. Applicants need to demonstrate ample PvP experience, and a high level of past tournament participation is recommended. The ability to commit to both days of the weekend and multiple SCL dates is requested, and it is also asked that you not participate in the SCL in any way should you opt to become a commentator-we don't want active competitors "in the booth". Contact Seldarine for details.

Miscellaneous

We will have a guide for all teams entering the tournament that will be sent out to team captains in advance to help prepare them and inform them of anything they need to know. This is currently pending but should be implemented before the 3rd SCL. Details on sign-ups and participation will be up soon for teams interested in being a part of SCL 3, but I have run out of space in this post. I WILL note that for now, the top 2 teams from SCL 1 and 2 are given a guaranteed invitation back. The rest I will leave to another post.

Finally bitched-out on the cap mods... shame.

Can we have an "if odyssey comes before scl3" rule set in case it does actually happened we can prepare in advanced?

Also, no word on whether we are allowed to use the Gnosis...

The feeling among the SCL staff was that creative teams will find other ways to make similar setups viable, but at the end of the day we wanted to ensure that we would not face a situation where two turtle setups capable of indefinitely running their turtle tanks could come face to face. This could potentially leave us with no resolution to the match and would present a very difficult situation for us. We're giving this modification a shot to see how it plays out. I have no doubt that we will see creative teams overcome the restriction, but perhaps in ways that are less sustainable and will eventually break down under the proper pressure. We will continue to keep an eye on the situation as further tournaments develop and will always be looking for ways to shake things up, so this may not be a permanent restriction.

I'll get back to you on this. I want to address it, but I have a lot to do between now and leaving for Iceland next week. I will aim to have this resolved before I leave, however.

I'll get back to you on this ASAP as well, it was overlooked.

Good changes for the most part.

I wish the points imbalance between Cruisers -> Faction cruisers ( 7 -12 ) and battleships (17 -> 18 to a navy -> 20 to a pirate BS ) was fixed but I suppose there will be more weekends for that :P

Well, I think the changes will bring on new and creative setups, which is good. I do like seeing turtle tanking setups personally as that's my bag, but if two came against eachother, I can imagine it being incredibly boring ^^

Sounds great. Nice changes :D

While I have dreamt about being a tournament commentator I dont really think I got what it takes ... yet.

Can't wait for the next event!

And to reiterate, we need another commentator!

All you armchair commentators, now is your chance to finally prove once and for all that your knowledge is as good as it is on the forums :)

Ideally we would like a Euro based commentator to balance it out but tbh anyone with the knowledge, passion and commitment can apply. Commentating is great fun and very rewarding.

If you would like to try out send me a mail and we can arrange something.

My concern related to what I read as you saying that only the teams that finished first and second are guarenteed a place in the following month.

Now although things are still being setup I was under the impression as the name suggests this is a league, so I was assuming that we also all gained some form of points that counted into a league table based on our place in the tournament each month, and then at the end of each year, there would be an overall league winner.

Now if my understanding is correct, then surely it would be unfair to refuse people who already have been part of previous tournaments guarenteed entry to the next one because then they have no chance of being able to place well in the league, surely the best approach to this would be give the captains a time limit after the announcement to declare if they will be participating, and any teams who respond no, or don't reply, then replace their team with a new team.

The reason I raise these concerns is because I would like to see this become more developed over time, for example maybe introduce some form of sponsorship, where the teams can be sponsored by a eve related service or website, and as a result they get some kind of advert on the screen during their teams matches, and obviously the better you team is in the league the better sponsorship deals you'll get, it'll also enable a way for teams to earn extra ISK for doing the tournament, since although it's only 1 weekend, some of the teams also devote quite a bit of time to the tournament in training.

I have one question about the SCL: how can I participate?
It's nowhere on their website...

To be honest, with SCL beeing on SiSi, I kind of lack the interest to watch. I wonder if I'm the only one.

In my book, SiSi tournaments lack important elements of Eve:
a) consequences / tangible losses and b) beeing part of the "One Universe".

I know, tournaments will always have a special place, as CCP helps to prevent interference from others and to ensure the rules. But there's only so much you can change until it's not longer part of Eve at all. May aswell have StarConflict matches :p

EDIT:
Don't get me wrong, as long as enough participants and viewers are having fun and the orga is satisfied with the turnout, yay. I don't expected everything Eve related to be entertaining to me.

"First off, due to popular demand, we will be including a Best of 5 match to determine the third place winners."

Popular demand really ? Way I remember it people thought a single match to determine it would be a good idea, is anybody really going to want to watch 5 matches to see who ends up in third place ? :P
I think even best of 3 would be too much, best of 5 is just stupid.

You are not the only one thinking like that, but IMO you are wrong:
A)
- serious teams does not care about isk, if its needed they raise isk from contributors or earn by themself
- losses in ships are irrelevant, what matters is to win or loose the match, and have good time
B)
- simplified, tranquility is big cluster of computers (hosts), each running an instance of a database, one per system
- what happens in the torunament is GM makes your client to connect to another database, "in Jove space", and that database and host are used to prevent interference as you explained yourself - thats host is not part of TQ, same thing with SiSi, as spectator you can watch the video broadcast, and for spectator its not important to what exactly are competitors clients connected to

I personally agree, we had decided upon a match for third place, I wasn't aware we had decided it would be best of 5. We will talk about this.

I think they went with 5 either because of balancing the number of fights, or straight reciprocity for alternating between 2 matches.
Strictly speaking inserting 3 fights inside of 5 still results in time between.

I think they went 5 matches, so we can bet more money on MoMa.

That's all.
