Sheild vs Armor

Probably a topic that's been beaten to death, but I could use a little clarity.

I'm back to Eve after a six year hiatus and currently fitting out a Hurricane to do L3 missions. Reaching waaay back in my memory, I always used to set these up with an armor tank. The certificates call for an armor tank. But... all the fittings I've found (on battleclinic etc.) use a shield tank. Is this right? Have there been game changes in the last many years that make shield tanking more viable?I have the skills to fit either about equally.

Both are just fine, passive shields or armors on cane. Depends on personal preference and area where you are.

I think I'll be mostly fighting Angel Cartel, if that makes a difference.

Shields better against angels due to higher base resist. So fill mids with shieldstuff and prop, lows with all kinds of dmg enhancers and odd shield relay.

Something like this:

650mm Artillery Cannon II
650mm Artillery Cannon II
650mm Artillery Cannon II
650mm Artillery Cannon II
650mm Artillery Cannon II

Large Shield Extender II
Explosive Deflection Field II
Adaptive Invulnerability Field II
10MN Afterburner II

Shield Power Relay II

Be sure that you aren't looking at pvp setups for the Hurricane, which are mostly shield/speed fits.

Confirming this is what you should aim for, its generally better than armour cause you can fit more damage mods.

This is simply not true.

Armour has its pros and cons. It is better for some fleets and worse for others. When it comes to PvE, the best ships all shield tank, but there are armour tanking ships not far behind. It is mostly down to taste.

I made very different experiences. Doing mission running in lvl 4 missions I used Caldary BS and Amarr BS and when I have to fight like 10 Arch Angel battleships or Blood Riders firing at the same time along with some BC, I made better experiences while armor tanking. But then again my ships are fitting with nothing more then cap rechargers, modules for pushing restistances and 2 big reppers. So I am cap stable with 2 large reppers and most of the time can make the whole mission in one rush. So I loose just like 5 percent of the armor before it gets refilled by the reppers.

But thins works only if not more then about 10 BS are firing at me at the same time.

That didnt work with shield tanking against different enemies.

But may be it was my fault?

I generally fit shields for PVE and armor for PVP. regardless of what the ship is meant to fit.

Fitting for shields frees up low slots for damage mods which can really increase your DPS, while fitting for armor frees up mid slots for tackle and e-war. Of course there are good armor fits for PVE and good shield fits for PVP, but in general that is my preference.

For example I have a PVE fleet typhoon with a shield fit based around an X-large ASB that does over 1200 DPS. I also have a Navy Domi with a shield fit i use for missions. Filling the low slots with damage mods not only increases DPS but reduces mission completion times, and reduces the load on your tank as you are killing the rats faster. Armor is very popular for PVP especially in the larger ship classes. Most capital fleets are armor fleets. Anything cruiser and lower seems to lean toward shields recently but both are viable.

Verbosity aside, shields for Angels.

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.
