The Khanid secession is kinda missing.

Otherwise, both thumbs up.

I tried it briefly. The idea is great, but the implementation definitely needs more work. The gaps are so huge initially, that for a moment I thought you only had the first 2 events ready. On the other hand if you scale back the timeline, most events become overlapped in to a large blob of unorganized and unclickable mess. To go from a view, that shows the timeline clearly to a view where individual grouped events become clear takes a lot of clicking on the zoom buttons. It shouldn't take this much effort to use a simple timeline.

You really need to rethink how to more conveniently switch between closeup view and a timeline view. Consider having a constantly visible overview of the timeline at the bottom of the screen and have it be clickable. Hovering over it should show a zoomed view of that portion of the timeline and clicking on it should lock the view to that point and return to show it when the mouse cursor no longer hovers over the timeline.

It is an addition to the current timeline and it should always shows the entire timeline in a single screen. That way the user can constantly see where in the timeline the zoomed view is situated. It keeps the current large zoomed view in the middle of the screen, but gives the user the ability to quickly navigate and switch between the different view modes without losing our perspective where it all fits in the big picture. Easy for the user to navigate and understand and gets rid of the clickfests with the zoom buttons.

When I was in the AJ project I took samples of life in W-space. I published 3 abstracts on it, all available as in-game items to anyone who visits Site One. As such the information in those abstracts I assume can be considered canon. One abstract found that life as we know it (That is, life from Earth) was introduced into W-space during the dark ages. So you could add:

Sometime in the dark ages: Life from the home world introduced to the planets in Anoikis (W-space).

Also for the AJ project itself:

The start of the Arek'Jaalan project.

The erection of Site One.

If I click on the timeline link it just takes me to some dodgy-looking search engine Question

Try again in some hours. Apparently CCP just bought the domain and did not know that it takes some time until the DNS change takes affect everywhere.

The link for the interactive timeline isn't working for me.

It either opens a blank page (IE) or a strange page that mostly redirects you to a bogus online market place (with Chrome). :S

Hey, we're looking at the "weird/blank page opening up" issue, looks like it's due to DNS propagation. We're seeing if we can do anything to push it faster, but it will at least resolve itself soon.

I learned a lot I didn't already know from looking at the timeline. This is a cool idea! Links from the descriptions of events to relevant pages in the EVE Wiki would be good.

Also, for ideas of other events to include, this would be a good place to start!

I hired a professional concept artist to draw this awe inspiring image to better highlight what I'm talking about.

I had the bogus search engine page also at first, then remembered old trick about clearing my DNS cache. Fixed it :)

On a Windows machine, to clear your DNS cache, close your browser then just open the Command prompt then type at the c:\> prompt the following command:

IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS

Restart your browser and you should be able to access eve.com right away. This will help for a lot of people, but if the changeover of eve.com's DNS settings hasn't hit the nearest nameserver to you, nothing but waiting will help.

(Edit: Sorry Linux/Mac people, don't know commands for this on those OS's, imagine it is something very similar).

It's beautiful, I really like what you've done with this, it is something really needed. Agree with prior comments about the "master" timeline along the bottom needing some loving. Really looking forward to seeing more added to it, soon!

LOL

I love this place :)

That idea is pretty good. All the Pre-YC100 timeline is pretty static, and huge. Don't scale the whole timeline based on the huge history gaps, base it on the 10-20 years that are going to matter, and use some sort of logarithmic scale to point out the history back towards the Eve gate opening.

Also, congrats CCP on putting Eve's history into a concise tl;dr format that I could be interested in. I read the whole thing and know more now about the lore than I have in my past 5+ years of playing

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

i notice no one has yet mentioned the crielier incident back in 2004 .... the one and only time that I have EVER seen all the players unite under one banner to fight a common enemy ..... it was a bloody good weekend aswell ... it was amazing just to watch the ships of various sizes going through one jump gate......and ten mins late the pods coming out ! ...

it was a bloody awesome weekend

then there was wacky races ....lol that was a laugh ...30 system round trip jumpgate race organised by the devs ... and other pilots trying to gank you ... fun times .

oooh yeah ...then there was the time when lord zap from M0o getting chased down the street headed by the devs headed by TomB cos he had narcked most of the player base with his sly and underhand tactics ...mittens didnt have an inch on zappy . he was the consumate tactician /pvper back in the day ...shame he doesnt play anymore .lol the players allways had the "boots of escaping" fitted whenever zap was spotted in any given region .Big smile

Nice! Love it.

Small nitpick: "AD" comes before the year number, not after, so year dates ought to be written as AD 7987, AD 20544, etc.

Once this is fixed, my internal grammar **** will let me give it five out of five thumbs up.

Strictly, basing it off Latin grammar, you're absolutely correct. However, both usages of placing the AD before or after the date are in common and accepted use in modern English. The important thing is to be consistent about it.

Here we're being consistent with the usage adopted throughout EVE's background material in the past from the very first timelines, in fiction and through to our evelopedia content.

Sorry we won't be getting that fifth thumb but there it is. Blink

On the time-scale, as Zulu said: it's a priority to address the problem of displaying the very long history of New Eden with continuity and a nice experience.

This is only the beginning.

This is really great! Thank you.
Some initial comments.. I think you need to be able to zoom in a lot more to be able to see more hidden, smaller events that would otherwise be drowned out by the major ones.

Also, while huge player events that affect much of the universe need to be on there, it would be nice to somehow integrate it to tell smaller personal stories and accomplishments. Something like the ability for a corp to add it's own timeline along with EVE's general timeline and share it with corp members or curious public.
