Are Missiles Viable in PvP?

My primary interest in EVE is PvP, and I'm trying to decide On which nation's ships I want to spec into. I like the aesthetics of missiles, but have heard that they're not very popular in PvP. Are they viable? If I chose them over turrets, would I be sacrificing a significant amount of PvP capability? What are their strengths and weaknesses?

Thanks in advance.

Turrets have the advantage of Instant damage to the target.
Turrets have the disadvantage of tracking.

Missiles have the disadvantage of flight time, as the target may already be dead by the time they get there.

Both systems are vulnerable to ECM

Missiles and turrets are both viable. It's just that now there are less Drake blobs everywhere.

Missiles are almost guaranteed to hit, but the damage is dependant on how long they've flown (Max Flight Time), Signature Radius, Flat damage (Your own skills, same as turrets), and size.

As Kitty Bear stated above, both systems are prone to ECM. But there is one perk for Missiles: FoF (Friend or Foe) Missiles. They target whatever is closest, so beware.

small and medium sized missiles are pretty popular. the larger kinds not so much. the advantages and disadvantages are obvious from the mechanics.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Just a random thought really ...

If you do go missiles, i'd say it's probably best to go the Rocket & HAM route over light & heavy.
for pvp you'll want to fit a web and point, so your generally going to be under 15km from target

which makes the long-range missiles kinda redundant, plus rockets & HAM's have the advantage of higher dps

The HAM (Heavy Assault Missile) LEGION is my fav ship in the game.

Directed Selectable damage type to kill your targets.

Missiles are fine if you do solo or small gang pvp, they're only fine in fleets if the rest of your fleet uses them as well. Thus ut depends on what kind of pvp you're looking for, if you want to do fleet pvp then it's just one of the options that may be used, nothing more.

Small scale PVP 40~ per side. yes missiles are jsut as valuable as guns, probably more-so when it comes to anti support.

larger scale pvp 100+ per side. no, in most cases targets will be dying fast enough that the majority of your missiles will not reach their target.

the main exceptions to this is where a lot of logi ships are involved because this means ships are dying slower etc, but you will still end up with in light missiles not arriving at targets. also the role of anti support is still good for missiles because you don't miss.

Judging by the amount of missile ships I encounter (condor, kestrel, caracal, stealth bombers, even drakes - there always must be a Drake) I would say that missiles are still used.

True. Not every type of PvP will be the same. There are times where missiles suck (for instance when you need a really high alpha). But it doesn't mean that they are useless.

Personally, in the past did a practise 1v1 against a player and he put a TD on my drake....which I responded with a whole lot of laughing....

For close-range combat with light craft, missiles are absolutely viable. The Hawk and CN Hookbill are quite nasty missile brawlers.

It really depends on what you are flying and what you are fighting.
Rockets on Frigates (a rifter for example) are common especially with brawlers which get in nice and close.

HAM's are good as they have high DPS but the main issue is that you have to get close enough. I get around 29km using HAM II's which often isn't enough range as the opponent will sit and kite me at 30km. This is where something like Heavy Missiles work well. Yes, you lose the DPS but there is zero point in having a higher DPS if it can't be applied.

If you can get in close though, yes web and warp are handy (presuming you're not in a fleet that has a dedicated trapper) but you'll want a MWD and be cap stable really.
