I guess this could be of interest here, as well.

Nice, but will it still be valid in Odyssey? They seem to overhaul the scanning system again so I assume not.

From the announcement:
Quote:
EVE Online's nineteenth free expansion, Odyssey, offers new tools for exploring the stars, challenges you to breach the unknown for adventure and rewards, and to face what lies on the other side. A re-imagined scanning system, intuitive navigation and new exploration modules will aid you as you search the heavens for your next conquest.

Also, please click the thread in my signature and ask CCP for more advance info about those changes, so they don't just throw a completely new and potentially terrible scanning system at us.

Excellent question, most likely not, but we cannot say for sure. On the presentation they talk about a "Discovery scanner", which means that it could be a completely different system in addition to the current one.

In any case I am already on SISI and plan to test all the changes to scanning as soon as it is released, as I did with the apochrypha launch. So, I'll keep an eye on the changes and hopefully will have figured it out before the launch. The incarna version came up without announcement, so nobody went to test it beforehand, and it was more complex than the apochrypha formula. This case is more similar to the Apochrypha one, hopefully.

EDIT:

Unfortunately it is not easy to judge whether a scanning system is terrible until it is implemented. I remember during apochrypha beta the lot of people crying blood because "scanning is too difficult", even before DEVIATION were inserted into the system... Then immediately after launch again people were crying "scanning is too difficult" (I was the only one who was saying "scanning is too easy". I still say that Big smile).

Still, Apochrypha has been one of the most successful expansions of EVE, hands down, and the scanning system, while having some shortcomings, still is much better than it used to be before apoc.

After the fanfest it seems that the answer to the question you ask is: "yes".

From what they said during the EVE keynote, it seems that the "discovery scanner" will be something that amounts to a graphical representation of a cross between the onboard scanner and the old multispectral probes, and for the rest they are adding minigames for radar and magnetometric sites, and are improving the interface for scanning. But it seems they are not touching the mechanics of scanning.
