Urgent: About multiple same modules penalties

Well, this can be considered as a noob question, but I need some explanation about this!

Most upgrade modules -overdrive injectors, gyrostabilizers, etc- have a very specific section on their descriptions that says something similar to 'Using more than one module of the same type or similar modules that affect the same atribute on the same ship will result on a penalty to that atribute'.

Apart from the fact that doesn't explain how much penalty is applied or how is applied at all, there's something that keeps me out of attemping to do semi-pro loadouts: if there's a penalty, WHY do so much people repeat this kind of modules in their loadouts when they're trying to get a bonus, not a penalty?! Many. many fittings at BattleClinic and similar sites show this and I don't understand how can they be forgetting those penalties so easily...

Please explain me this; you know fitting properly is very, very important at EVE but I can't do it if I think 'I'd better not fit this module twice, since I'll get a penalty' while others are doing it so happily.

Thank you very much!! ^ ^

i have bumped your question into the ultra-low priority queue as a penalty for misusing the urgent tag

Those penalties are applied to the bonus, not the stat itself.

So if you get a 15% rate of fire bonus for instance, that second Gyro will only give you 85% ish of the 15% bonus.

You still get a benefit, but its not as much as that first module.

Each additional module affecting the same stat suffers a greater penalty. I'll let you go and research it yourself since there are loads of in depth explanations around...

The "penalty" that modules/rigs incur refers to the effectiveness of the bonus(es) they give and how much is shaved off for each additional module/rig that gives the same bonus (it's often referred to as "EVE's Law of Diminishing Returns").

Generally speaking (and bear with me here because I don't have the precise numbers)... the first/best module/rig you slap on to a ship applies 100% of its bonus... the second one adds on somewhere around 80%... the third adds around 40%... the fourth time you add the same bonus you will get less than 20% of the listed bonus on the module/rig.

Most players don't throw on more than 3 mods/rigs of the same type/bonus as the gain from a 4th or 5th module/rig/bonus is almost negligible. However, some people live by the numbers and will throw on the extras to get that higher decimal point of performance (which isn't really recommended outside of PVE activities).

When it comes to resistance modules, they're a little different. They apply to the remaining damage, not the total.

so, assuming you have 100 em damage coming in:
50% resist module drops that to 50.
Another 50% drops it to 28 damage. (there are stacking penalties too, just to confuse matters.)
A third drops it to 21.
a fourth to 18.

eveHQ's quite good at showing the figures. just hit the audit button to see how it stacks.

Damage controls have the massive benefit that they don't have stacking penalties with other modules.

Please excuse me for that, I had a bad day and didn't think enough about it. I understand the penalty.
