I'm about to build a new character. For faction warfare. PvP only, not for plexing. A Caldari. And I'd like some help and suggestions.

What ship do you suggest for a new pvp player? Preferably frigate or destroyer.

What weapon systems are worth it? Are missiles effective in pvp, or do I need to focus on hybrids?

Any propulsion or ewar skills that can be helpful? I'm trying to keep it simple and focus entirely on one ship and attack pattern, so as to lower training requirements.

Any trainer corps or even respected pvp fw corps that you'd suggest? I don't doubt that everybody knows which corps are real, and which ones are farmers. I'd like to shoot other players, not npc's, if that clears things up.

And yes, this is an alt.

If you prefer hybrids - Merlin (Blasters)- then Cormorant(Rails) and then Moas(Blasters).

Missiles are great - Go Hookbill then Corax and then Caracal if you prefer missiles. You will want both rocket and light missile skills - Light missile being the more important of the two.

Prop is a must. A MWD or an AB MUST be on every ship you undock. (or both on some hookbills)

My corp isn't respected or real but when we bother to undock we usually get some pew pew.

Apply if you want - we need more members to do bad smack talk and blob the lillypads in Nenn......... oppps I mean to 1v1 the Gallente.

Only thing I can guarantee is - You will get to kill Gallente & You will get killed by Gallente.

I sense so much sarcasm from this post, but I have so little experience in these matters, I can't tell if I'm being trolled or just getting up front advice. /sigh

Shocked

Was an honest answer with some light jokes about my corp at the end.

Don't worry Laney is like that all the time.

But do follow his advice around the ship/weapon advancement.

Come join us and shoot the gallente, and occasionally get shot by them!

I think what you meant to say was that we don't war dec ourselves every 3 months, and we don't make life so miserable in our own militia that half of our new corps leave within a month.

I once killed Super Chair because my overview wasn't set up right. He was totally chill about it and suggested how to correct it, but I still wake up in the night in a cold sweat after having nightmares about it.

It was like killing Jesus and I know that when my time comes, I'm going to hell.

What ship do you suggest for a new pvp player? Preferably frigate or destroyer.

If you want to fly Caldari ships, I would recommend the condor, merlin, and cormorant. They are all good ships and relatively low skill requirements to be effective

In my opinion, rockets and missiles are effective at the smaller ship size (frigs and dessys) but start to lose effectiveness as you get larger in size. Therefore if you are choosing one or the other, I would focus on hybrids. This has the added benefit of these skills being useful for other turret systems

Being able to run both an afterburner and mwd is almost a necessity. Without going to a specific ewar hull, I would say being able to use tracking disruptors and sensor damps are both useful. Also while not ewar, being able to use warp dusruptors, warp scrams, and webs is a must.

I don't know of any trainer corps however, I know of the following alliances that are active for Caldari in the US time zone.
Templis Dragonaors
Caldari State Capturing
Southern Renegades

EU timezone I only know of IBS and Section 9.

I apologize to all I forgot to mention

As for which to join, that's up to you, however, my heavily biased opinion is that you should join Caldari Colonial Defense Ministry. We welcome newer players and operate nightly in the US time zone. If you are EU based I would recommend Progressive State. Commissar Veldt, their CEO, is a stand up guy

If you are interested in joining CCDM, please contact myself, Scylus Black, or see our public channel CCDM CHAN.

Regardless of your corp choice, I welcome a new brother in arms

I'd add that Southern Renegades have a few pilots in EU timezone, like me.

My personal advice when asked this question is to start from the end; figure out which is the way of flying that you enjoy, or want to get good at. Do you want to be the hard-skinned, close-quarters brawler, or do you want to emphasize speed and long range, or perhaps utilising Electronic Warfare to completely hinder the enemy's operative capability? Will I be using it as a fleet support resource, or am I going for the lone-wolf solo?
There is no jack of all trades answer. There is the right ship, adapted to the right style, for the right scenario in my opinion.
Those are usually the questions i ask myself before training/fitting anything.

Keep in mind that the ships you choose to fly are completely unbound from your character's race or the Militia you choose to fight for. My personal advice is to download EFT, where you can have an on-paper idea of a ship's purpose, figure out which is your preferable way of flying it, and then act accordingly.
