I thought everyone knew that people in highsec don't use voice coms.

Another fine example of nullsec superiority.

No. Noone in HS ever heard of this "coms" thing you speak of. We still use stone tools and leeches. We've just developed language and send riders on horseback to talk to each other! Please halp us!

I don't want to help anyone Mr.Kidd. Honestly I am just curious what the current status of voice comms in highsec is.

In Everquest I only used voice on raids. For day to day activity I didn't like it because it seemed to take away from the immersion. Eve is a bit different though in that the atmosphere is not so much diminished by hearing RL sounds and voices.

It sounds like the answer is that highsec players do not as a rule use voice coms. The reasons for that have been pointed out, highsec gameplay actually discourages group activity I guess.

I wonder if that could be changed, or if it should be changed.

In EQ there was a scale for XP, it worked out that the bigger the group the more XP everyone got (regular groups maxed out at 6 players). Maybe Eve would benefit from such a dynamic.

"Hey guys, WTF why aren't you on TS"
- Don't have a mic
- Don't have it
- WTF is TS?

Lowsec -- IDK, never flew with a true lowsec crew. Though when I was in Empire, the people who would roam were more apt to getting on TS all the time.

Nullsec - TS/mumble/vent/jabber/whatever. People are on even when not logged in, and usually ready to go at a moment's notice.

That's what the kick command is for.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

In WH we all have to learn how to speak Dolphin. We tried learning Bat but only the girls could speak it properly. Which gave R&K an unfair advantage.

That way we can talk and use echo location at the same time. Saves hitting D-Scan every 3 seconds.

There's not very much need to actually "talk" other people in high sec save incursions. But in null (like in incursions) things can happen so fast that voice is preferred. Even when things arne't happening, Voice comms is part of the "culture" of null sec.

I've got TS3, mumble and vent on my system so I can talk to people in different alliances.

lol well for me it sort of lags. i have to hold the key down for like 3 seconds before i start talking and 3 more after i'm done or it always seems half of what i said gets cut off. so i gave up on eve voice for the most part. i will use ts or mumble. seems ts is more popular in my eve circle.

that is when i feel like talking and/or listening to other people talk.

When SOE put in voice chat in EQII, everyone used it 24/7. You're in it logging in; questing; during harvesting; during dungeon and raid runs. It's a v-e-r-y social game. Raid guilds would get their vent servers, but overall the ingame chat was fine. Then when you're out of the game they always had the station IM service.

And there's no 100 folks in voice being buttholes, it's an ingame service and SOE is strict on behavior.

Love how they measure guild population too: unique accounts. So a guild with 800 unique accounts = not 80 players with 10 toons. Logging into a game like that there's 30 people in guild voice chat alone. It made the game not feel so small.

Many features in that game that would be great in other games...many. I can imagine the screams here if they can lose skill points for dying. PvPers like to brag about "I'M IRONMAN!!!", but conditions like deleveling if they die to much makes them wimps.

But hey, I'm the "carebear". Bear

Generally, the more challenging the content, the better the coordination required. Voice is a tool to improve team coordination.

It's also a place for people to get on and bullshit with each other in small communities. But these generally form from teams that required coordination to overcome challenging content. When you get a bunch of random people on comms for no reason, it's just a bunch of random assholes on comms with nothing in common.

Fortunately the comms software these days is fairly sophisticated and has awesome advanced features. Like mute.

we haven't bought in on the "freedom" that Sansha promised. Looks like it may have been the better ideaBlink
