Any reason you would have to? So long as you aren't just posting crap and are been reasonable I wouldn't think that would be a problem, its not like you can only post pro-ccp propaganda if you join! At least not that I've been told ;)

Even if ISD rules don't explicitly forbid it, it would be hypocritical. Bash CCP on one account and get annoyed at moderation locking legitimate threads with "no content" as reason, then log in to ISD account and start doing exactly that.

I don't know the ISD rules, but I wouldn't be surprised if it contained some rules of that type. Like government employees not allowed to get politically active...

While I do feel a bit bad about a situation where people who had a job are now being replaced by free volunteers (nobody can deny this) I also realize that having to employ people living in different time zones all around the globe just to monitor a forum 24/7 might not be the best kind of investment when you are in a financial tight spot.

Centralizing the Community Team in Iceland means getting a lot more benefit from these people from a company point of view, though it comes at the cost of being able to moderate the forums at all hours. The 'luxury days' are gone... for now.

The Community Team is looking to extend it's reach by calling out would-be volunteer moderators for the forums. Help us help you keep the forums clean and enjoyable!

This new team will also work closely with the Community Team to gather your feedback and make sure your voices are heard by the game developers.

Please read the blog by CCP Navigator, and if you have any questions, please make good use of this comment thread.

What about offer those for some of those who got fired a few days ago?

They already know a lot of stuff about eve and the community.

Volunteers to moderate forums?
I'm all for it, if you're not in my alliance or you say something displeasing me I'll just kick you or erase your posts, k?

The idea that someone will use the CCL role to show favoritism to one alliance, corporation or individual will be addressed with the volunteers and a zero tolerance policy will be shown.

I would also like to give you an update that applications are pouring in already and there are some fantastic candidates that we will be talking to in the coming week. Please continue to send applications and we really look forward to talking to you all Smile

Seems harsh to fire people then outsource the customer service to the community to do for free.

After playing this game for 4 years I must admit I was tempted.

However, after reading this thread, the idea of beeing an unpaid enforcer of company policies which apparently includes feeding blatant lies to their customers suddenly lost all appeal.

I'll leave that to people like Sreegs and Navigator. They seem to do it so well.

Just a few random questions here...

Why was the community team reduced by 50%? That does seem entirely counterproductive if you are trying to enhance the amount of communication (while I have never seen a lack of community here compared to other games, the idea still seems counter to what you are trying to do)

Also with these volunteers being part of the ISD, will they be able to help out with the ingame help channel? Or even the new help channel which is restricted to just new accounts?

From memory, ex-CCP Fallout has tweeted to the effect that this volunteer moderator programme has been in progress for some time. The aim was to free up cycles for the community team to pursue productive work instead of baby-sitting the potty-mouths. I'd suggest that the volunteer moderators are even more necessary now.

This article referenced by ex-CCP Fallout may help you grok the situation better (note the date): http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/37995/Community_Managers_Not_Just_Forum_Moderators_Anymore.php

As said in the Dev Blog and stated in some replys aswell, the CCL has been in the works for some moths already.

The ingame help channel is moderated by STAR, while a CCL will focus on forums only.

I have just one question:
How does firing half the community team -and replacing them with 6-hour-a-week volunteers- improve the quality of EvE?

so do volunteers get any reward for doing this? such as free game time?

There is some form of compensation indeed. Why not apply and find out? Blink

Though the truly civic minded will be applying to be moderators because they wish to serve the community, not because there may or may not be some freebies involved.

So it's finally ready to try on humans then?

I do not approve of having volunteer non-professionals doing the job of professional employees. I want someone who is accountable to their employer, rather than some nitwit forum goer.

Hi,
if you could answer the two following questions, that would be nice.

1. If someone gets the "job", will he get a new account for moderating the forums or will he get a tag in front of his name?

2. Are these people allowed to run for a CSM seat in future elections?

1. You wont use your player account.

2. As long as someone is in ISD he/her is not allowed to run for candidacy as CSM.
