AF over normal in PvP/PvE

I am training for neut but running tackle in the meantime. Are the AF better than running a normal for tackle? I've currently been running a Executioner but thinking about running a Vengeance for the three mids (Web, MWD, and scram/disputer) and better armor.

Is there any clear cut advantage to running a Vengeance over the executioner?

It seems to me that the speed would make the Executioner better for tackling.

AFs have higher survivability and vastly increased damage potential.
Only downside is the cost, really.

The Veng is a great ship. If you can afford to lose it in a role you're comfortable in, go for it.

Is it worth taking time from my Neut training to train a good AF Fit, or should I stick with the Executioner for now?

AFs are combat frigates. You use them for shooting stuff. They can sometimes be good heavy tackle, but in general it's too much damage and too little mobility for proper tackle.

If you want a t2 ship for tackling, look at interceptors, specifically the Malediction. Among other cool things it gets a bonus to warp disruptor and scrambler range. At Interceptors V, it can disrupt out to 36km overheated with a sig of about 75, making it pretty damn hard to deal with before your fleet lands. Or, you can go with a more risky close-range fit with a scram which also works pretty well on the Malediction.

What Kahega said; also if you've been flying an Executioner so far, you'll be much more comfortable in a Malediction than a Vengeance.

Thanks all, after reading what you guys have said, and looking some more into Interceptors I think that's what I want to do. This will be my in the meantime/PvE

actually T1 attack frigates are great after recent changes.
you can run ewar heavy setup with condor/slasher or have almost 200DPS with atron

it's possible fit any of them with meta mods and overall cost will be below 3 mil. you can try them first before switching to TII ships.

If you're in dire need of alot of speed you should roll with the T1 'Attack' frigates (Condor, Slasher, Atron, Executioner) and if you're looking for more heavy tackle you should use the 'combat' frigates (Merlin, Incursus, Punisher, Rifter).

AFs are improvements on the combat frigates however if you need lots of speed and survivability you can use interceptors which are an improvement on the attack frigates,

Really the only reason why not to fly one is cost.

If you can afford to lose it like you could lose a regular frigate then go ahead.

So there isn't a reason not to fly one.

You're more likely to get blobbed in one and its harder to get fights.

Anything slightly shiny will get blobbed, as for your other point I agree

While this Eve Altruist article was specifically comparing the Taranis and the Enyo, you may find the methodology useful in your current comparison process.

Trying out all the things to do here in Eve - it's quite a checklist. So I made a blog Jakob's Eve Checklist
