One way to compromise on this would be to have an "adult" setting for avatars that you can turn on and off.

Every player is allowed to keep one pic for adult mode, and another for safe-for-work mode. (Default setting should be safe for work of course.) And people could switch the view mode to whatever they are comfortable with.
