The irony of the "homogenization" of EvE

Now that balance is making it's way through New Eden, we hear more and more outcries from forum warriors about the death of Eve in the form of Eve is dying™, dumbing down Eve™, making every ship the same™ etc etc.

I'm not bringing very much new content to the table, sorry for that, but if at least one of you who know you feel like any of these things read this then I am happy. Even more so if you understand what I'm trying to say here.

Why is Eve not getting dumbed down, and why is the balancing of ships not homogenization?

Eve is not like WoW. In wow, once you choose a race, that is the race you play. You can't respec from a troll into an elf, so there will always be variety in the game between classes because of this, and some will be OP and some will be UP.
But in Eve you can play as whatever you want. Your starting point only gives you a few hours ahead in one race. If a ship is OP, everyone can fly it, and variety is killed.

Many have said that "the Drake/Hurricane was perfectly balanced, only the other ships needed a buff". Ignoring the inherently flawed logic behind how a ship can be balanced by being better than everything else at everything, you have to realize that the closer all the battlecruisers are to each other in terms of performance, the LESS they are getting homogenized! Why? Because a game where there are only one or two viable ships, is a game where everyone flies the same, therefore homogenizing the player experience.

I do a bit of gatecamping in nullsec (yay, pro PvP right here guys!) and before rebalance I mostly met (you guessed it) Drakes and Hurricanes. Everywhere, the FOTY ships were roaming, with almost no variation. So you learn to fit your small camp to counter these ships.

Now after the balance, I have no idea what will land in my bubble. People fly all sorts of cruisers and battlecruisers, because they are all viable, yet they all have different combat tactics, damage types and fits. I have to be a lot more careful with my fits and tactics, because anything can land in my camp.

So Eve is not dying, it's getting more lively.
Eve is not getting dumbed down, it's getting more variety in choice.
And every ship is not made the same, every ship is becoming viable, and thus they are in practice more varied, because you will not meet a Drake or a Hurricane in 95% of the situations you are in.

So there is my rant on the matter. I love Eve more and more for each expansion. I think it's a great game and the balancing has made it so much better with a whole range of ships being worth their ISK where before they were not.

If you feel that I am wrong, please tell me why, and what made you feel that way.

I like you, I will kill you last.

A reasonable, well thought out counter-rant to the Rant of the Month. Is this still the internet?

Very good point. I enjoy the variety of speciliazed fits in the already rebalanced classes that people are posting left and right on the various channels I frequent instead of the usual "Use < insert FOTM here>" standard response. Moving away from the old rock - paper - lolwtfpwn shotgun will only be good for the game in the long run.

This. A thousand times this. Now the ship you fly is just a matter of taste and training instead of "what is everyone else winning in?" I like that I can have more variety with my fits this way. Surprise shield tank Hyperion? No worries. Hull tanked q-boat Iteron? Sure, because **** you, I can, that's why. EVE is better for it. Thank you for this.

Reported for ranting in the forums.

Actually, never-mind. It was a good post.

Forget I said anything.

Nope, you're spot on. The variety of ships I see out there has gone through the roof in recent months, loving it.
