Socket closed & black screen before login

i keep getting my chars dc'd with the socket closed message then when i try to log back in the client freezes on the black screen before the log in screen appears, i know i can fix it by removing my settings folder but thats a real pain in the ass. any ideas? im usually running 5 clients on macbook pro but the most recent instance of this was only with one client up.
