Hey there,

Last night i was reading the Forsaken Ruins short story and something caught my eye.. How were three to four angel rats able to outgun three capsuleer ships? I get it that there was an "officer" involved and that those really kick ass (A blackbird, omen and tempest vs 1 officer would be capsuleer minced meat), but how come the "Angel Warlord" BS was mentioned as being so powerfull vs them?

Thats something that caught my eye on the Empyrean Age novel as well.. when that bhaalgorn alone was able to rattle an entire station, while to do the same in EVE takes dozens of POD ships. Imagine normal ones...

I think those instances are artistic licence rather then absolute rules. There to draw you in with a plot point and establish them selves as identifiable by being diffrent enough for you to remember.

I am pretty sure a Pod ship is on par if not better then a non-Pod ship depending on skills of capsuleer and mods equiped vs skill of captain/command staff/ crew/ engineering put into the ship and so forth.

It is. Very much so. There is no way an Angel Warlord would be able to outgun a blackbird, an omen and a tempest all pod-piloted.

Granted.. those ships were damaged a lot because of their previous encounter with the officer.. But the lone non-capsuleer battleship (bhaalgorn) shooting at a station and scaring everyone inside it was pretty far-fetched..

I'd probably suggest it is like with many things that we see in our own world, where different individuals excel at certain things.

Why were some tank crews better during WW2 for example racking up numerous kills or where some people are better pilots or even people who excel in sports.

One capsuleer may have been decently skilled, but did the other group work better together, maybe they were veterans.

Remember that capsuleers become efficient also because they control all the ships functions with one mind, that's not to say that a well trained experienced group couldn't reach a similar efficiency.

Always reminds me of that skater that won the gold medal simply because the others made mistakes. All the others were better than him yet he still defeated them. Relating that to EVE, capsuleers make mistakes, they are still human. Smile

Nex (Cash Shop) / Aurum - removing sand from the sandbox since Incarna. Currently the only use for aurum is to buy virtual items in the in-game store, but Cockerill expects to expand its uses in the future.

Regarding the "Forsaken Ruins" story - keep in mind that in the year the story is set - YC 106/ 2004 - anything aside from "unnamed" (i.e., basic) tech 1 mods would have been for only the richest pilots. "Named" (meta) mods would be purely for the extremely influential, and tech 2 did not even exist (this is also why the CONCORD ships' tachyon beams are portrayed as so powerful - what are merely standard weapons now were instant death machines back then).

This makes a BS rat being dangerous to take on somewhat less of an exaggeration than it would be now, although I'd still think it is one.

Regarding the Bhaalgorn in Empyrean Age... well, frankly, Empyrean Age broke so many bits of existing backstory so hard for the sake of PLOT! that a the effect of a Bhaalgorn's lasers are the least of these inconsistencies.

Has anyone simply thought....maybe they didnt fit their ships well? Novels included, maybe nobody remembers that a ship can only take so much without being tanked.

Well you make a good point there. Back in 2004 battleship rats where tough..

And Azahni Vah'nos, you are basically describing officer rats..

The capsule tech, as given to the Caldari by the Jove, was "just" to reduce the crew size involved in operation a ship and maybe improve agility and reaction time of the pilot. Nothing more, nothing less.

Surely there may be some improvement in the meantime, but I think a capsuleer's ship is still no class of its own but remains in much the same range as a conventional ship. A bit more effective, maybe (because less requirements on life support may free up resources for something else), but a ship operated by a well-trained crew may still give a run for its money.
