Carrier main or alt?

I rat rarely, therefore I need to make a ton of isk per tick. I use 2 chars for that, the main in a cheap macharien that gets the job done and I recently started an alt that is now in a raven. I plan on orienting the main (fully dedicated minmatar) towards pvp and the alt (caldari at the moment) towards ratting.

The question is, who should I put in a carrier, the main in a Nisshoggur or the alt in whatever carrier is suitable for ratting?

Each Carrier has a purpose. Archon and Chimera are both Triage Carriers with Armour and Shield specialization respectively.

The Thanatos is the Carrier for ratting and solo PVE

The Nidhoggur is for repairing structures.

So you are suggesting I get my alt in a Thanatos?

I'm suggesting that you use whatever Carrier that you're already proficient in as all Carriers can already do it and do it well.

The Thanatos is just a little better at it

Arguably you will perform better in a well skilled BS for a fraction of the price and less chances of loosing the ship. I'd even pick a Tachyon Oracle or T2 fit Tengu over a carrier for ratting anytime, its just not worth the skilltime, ISK and risk imho.

Ratting carriers usually end up getting popped.

Stick with the race there good at. Archon,Chimera and Thanny are decent carriers

Probably yes.

I see what you did there... At least I was polite and gave it credit for POS repair.

Why not a SB? It's pretty much the same thing for ratting purposes, but less expensive and it can cloak.

If by SB you mean stealth bomber, I think you are just trolling. Seriously guys, when you have 2 characters ratting, one in a machariel and one in a raven, what do you upgrade the one in a raven to? Golem or carrier?

If you really want to risk over a billion isk on a Golem or Chimera then any alternatives suggested will go to waste. So my vote between Chimera and Golem is to go with a Golem. At least in a Golem you can align fast enough to safe up before that guy that just came into local can find you. If you mean ratting in belts, then you'll get around faster with Golem. If you can tolerate the bit of extra time to lock ships, fit a cloak so at least you can cloak up at a safespot till local empties out.

Carriers are good, but they are slow and huge targets.

This.

Nothing can beat faction fit Machariels and shield Vindicators for ratting, it's just impossible. Keep your carrier/s to move stuff around and eventually cap fleet ops for structure shoot or rep. Just don't.

Slowcat (sentry drone) Archon makes Thanny irelevant imho. Same DPS, no drone travel time, better tanking and usefull as triage in pvp so why to train tahnny now?

If you insist on using a carrier, make it either an archon or chimera (whether your alliance is running shield or armor slowcats). That being said - you will do much better with a faction fit battleships (or even a HAM tengu if you are in guristas/serpentis space). Having used a carrier for ratting before... it didn't really even compete with T2 fit T1 battleships.

However, if you really want to maximize isk/hour, put an alt in a thanny, assign 5 fighters to 2 HAM tengu's, and rip up forsaken hubs while that thanny hovers just barely outside the POS shields. Hell - you could even fit it for boosting while it was there too...

train carrier because you need a carrier. Being able to rat in one is an side benefit, and is a dubious reason to get one in the first place. Pirate BS will rat faster, is less of a risk, less of a hassle, and will cost about half as much.

1. The best carrier for ratting
A. There is not one, (although one can do it slightly better then others) but back to the point, if you say the thanny is the best your probably referring to its + damage to fighters, which is fail for ratting.

If you are ratting with fighters, your doing it wrong

2. If you need to say one may be better then another then it is the Archon

Why is it the archon?

A. Midslots it has 4 of them which can be used for 2 faction sebos and 2 faction omnis
A. Tank it has 25% to armor resis which is all the tank you will need for ratting and some so you can use most the lows (or half of them for damage mods)

With an archon, I make 33- 37 mil a tik, plus the loot (about 30 mil a tik as well) This is not including the goodies from faction npcs, it is up to you if you wanna do the escalations with me its not worth it.

A few tips about how to do this sense they are nerphing it anyway

1. Always pay attention to local
2. Get capital ships 5 for the agility bonus (which means if your paying attention to local you should be okay
3. Use curator tech 2s and warp kill havens (warp to havens at 50km)

And finally In before frig problem (I takes 11.9 seconds to target a frig which means most will be dead before they can orbit you, and even the ones who start moving are moving at you with low transversal.
