I suspect that if I had chosen a male character that people would not put up with me nearly as much as what they do.
However, I chose a female character 'cause everyone knows boys have cooties. Smile

I usually have Female characters. I name them after girls who always have some of my heart. In alot of avatar based mmorps, females always gave an advantage because the model itself was smaller leading to being clicked on and focused less frequently in PvP

And I guess the thunderboobs never get boring either eh?

It's more of a sliding scale where on one side you have respect but responsibility and on the other side you have freedom but no confidence.

Females are less threatening to the alpha males which affords them more breathing room. Some mistake this for an advantage but females are also treated as less stable and less reliable.

As a woman the advantages are very short term. The extra breathing room you are afforded is useful when you're new to a community but you are seen as naturally less stable and capable than men so there's a tendency for the men to coddle and protect you which makes it harder to grow and advance in a community so you have to work extra hard to earn the true respect.

At the same time the ever present hunt for the true females and the witch hunt for the "fake" ones endanger your gender identity further because showing any sort of personal fortitude, strength or independence will have people pounce on you and accuse you of being male. On top of that you can't really counter that by throwing your sex around at every corner because then you undermine your position further by looking like you want to draw attention to the fact that you are a woman when all you really want people to notice is what you're capable of.

So as a woman you're left to choose between being a giggling, smiley spamming moron. Having a posse of drooling idiots follow you around, making sexual innuendos at every turn.

or throwing away your gender identity and turning into Hillary Clinton in hopes of a chance to earn some respect based on your own merits and capabilities.

If there's some sort of middleground then I have yet to find it but it depends mainly on the people around you.

Being a woman is in no way a free ride nor does it afford you unwarranted benefits. You merely pay for short term rewards with your long term dignity. If you choose to sell it that is.

You used the phrase "alpha male" while typing on a forum for a hardcore science fiction space simulator. I'm sorry to say but there are no alphas here, just betas as far as the eye can see (which is variable dependent on how long a person's post is and whether someone has a high x scaled monitor).

Trolls & flames welcome as always. But some thoughts appreciated as well.

So why did you pick a female character?

u rgink i answered that in another post today

most of us are men and most of us prefer looking at something pretty even if they are pixels
beside they are just avatars

I do not agree with what you are saying , but i will defend to the death your right to say it...... Voltaire

I've always played girls in games. Nicer curves, their voices tend to be easier on the ears, you're generally accepted a bit better, etc. Picking a female character for EVE was natural, even back in the olden days when the avatar was just a tiny picture.

I'm not even sure what Akirei's gender is.

Because at the time, Achura had by far the best stats, and there was no talk of normalizing the stats across races like we see now.

And Achura men were just godawful ugly.

This. As a new player around 2006/2007 you were told by older players that Achura was the only race to go for, if you took any other race your character would be gimped for the rest of his life.

And for reference, this and this is how the Achura males used to look.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Why did you pick a white male character with cornrows and a goatee?

Why do people think of gender differently than other attributes?

Because changing your hairstyle or not shaving is on a slightly different level to "I think I'll chop off my tackle and get some silicone implants!"

It has been a while since this came up in the forums.

Does it matter, and does anyone really care?

Boobs, this isnt rocketscience.

This

Edit : I wonder why players like to have avatar with muscles and macho attributes ? are 95% of the male players shaped like mister universe irl so they just design their avatar so that they resemble ? Or is it an unacknowledged sexual attractionBlink

I think most people are confident enough in their own sexuality that they don't have to reinforce themselves via in-game avatars....

I am male and I have a female character, simply because i thought she looks better than the blokes.
