The Life of a Spy - How do I get started?

Author

I am looking for advice and guidance on how to become a spy for Empire corps. When I say spy, I mean doing dirty deeds for people, selling intel, theft, ganking - anything people don't want to get caught for.

I was just wondering if there are corps that actively look for these type of contractors or perhaps a way to find contracts of my own.

As long as it is profitable and naughty, I'd like to learn more.

The first and most important step is to declare in a public forum that you want to be aa spy. This helps you get noticed and start to go places in the world of secrecy and subterfuge.

Here's some simple advice... Try it. Find a corp, infiltrate it, see what Intel you can slowly gain that isn't the same junk we can get from evewhois or the like.

Pick an Indy corp, try to earn roles, find pos locations, where the mission runners are, and more importantly any details on routines. For example, a member list is useless, but finding out that every friday at 8am, they take a freighter to jita would be I.teresting.
Finding an Indy corp has a pos in the same system as am office is nothing, but finding they keep a pos in a wormhole for reactions and sneaking a probing alt into that wormhole so you can bring a combat fleet in is good. Finding the jump passwords for an alliance bridge network isn't too hard. Finding the password for the pos where they keep a bridge titan would be good. Joining red federation to spy on them for a wardec is nothing (open recruiting means everyone in corp is a spy). I.infiltrating goons to spy may be much more of a worthy challenge.

Or just see if you can join, then build trust and later steal their assets.

Just set yourself some challenging spy goals based on the stories you read in the forum and go for it.

Or are you looking for advice on finding easy marks?

I have done some small infiltration for personal gain but I was wondering if there were corps that actively seeked people who can offer regular and good intel when it's needed.

Easy marks, I guess would be the newer and more careless corps? Especially those that are newer since your ability to gain roles is easier when they're vacant and need filling.

If you have any insight on the better targets to get (both the easier, and the more profitable alike), then I'd love to hear what you've got to say! Smile

How to become a spy:

Declare to yourself, "I am going to be a spy." Tell no-one else. (You blew it this time, get a new character.)

Play the game as you normally would, as a player, not a spy. Spies playing like spies are really visible, sneaking around in their fedoras, cracking safes and taking pictures of documents and such. You don't want to do that because the moment you walk into a place everyone's gonna yell "SPY! SPY! BAN HIM!" and other things like that.

Cue a few months later: Are you someplace interesting? Does someone want intel on the place where you are, but can't get it? Congratulations! You can now activate your hidden spy subroutine. Not anywhere interesting? Keep working.

If you have to ask then you do not have the initiative needed for spy work.

Let me reiterate for those that don't understand the reason I created this thread. I have already infiltrated corps and actively stolen assets and money from targets. However, I was asking if there are any active organisations in place for "recruitment" of people that do such things. For example, maybe you have a corp that you believe should lose a few assets. Is there anywhere to be recruited for this type of thing?

Hmm

You sound the real deal.

Firstly can you post screenshots of your main spies sticky fingers pilfering the mentioned corps-sorry-targets assets.

Can you list the corps you stole from so that we may verify this with the corp CEO's.

A spy worth even a pinch of salt must possess the initiative and drive to seek out information without drawing attention, to put together connections without them being handed to him, and must have an inherent ability to sift good information from bad, knowing when to invest time and when to move on. Put simply if you had the makings of a good spy you would already be in channels, have made contacts, and have a finger in any pie you could reach. You wouldn't be here asking for the super secret spy club channel. The concept of that in itself is self defeating. Spies spy on spies too. Sometimes you might even be hired to spy on the clients own corp or members, for such reason contracts aren't exactly shown around in public.

As for the petty small scale stuff no one cares, its only a few mins work to put an alt in a target of opportunities corp for long enough to secure pos/unsecured assets and no one will pay for such small time services unless you have something like a 1 shot opportunity to bump a capital out of a pos, but then thats just opportunistic theft, nothing to do with spying.

I stand by my point, if you have to ask how to go about this kind of work, think about doing something else.

*EDIT* I have just read your other thread, and as I made the distinction above it seems like you are talking more about infiltration for awox bounties and theft. That's not spying. In fact that side of things is extremely accessible. Sit in mission running hubs and make notes of which corps pilots fly the shiniest ships, or look through recruitment ad's for "new player friendly" corps that themselves were started by inexperienced players (as in your other thread, 750m, nice catch for a few mins work) there are so many ways to find wealthy fish to fry. Good luck on that path, it's easy as hell, high sec is full of people who not only might be ignorant of the mechanics of the game, but also fail to learn from them once schooled. An opportunistic mindset will stand you in great stead, and to that end working alone can allow you greater freedom unless you find it more fun working towards a set objective.

Since when does Empire corps and Spy fit in the same sentence?

If you need to ask in public about how to do it, you shouldn't be doing this.

Anyway, it's safe to assume that every other toon in EVE is a spy. Everyone has alts in every alliance, and I've met folks who've shot themselves and then gotten a new ship from their alliance SRP.

EVE warfare can be one big circle jerk at times.

(But the spies don't want you to know this!)

This thread was created to find out if there were opportunities of employment as a spy. Judging by the replies I have had, I guess it's not a viable option to do such a thing.

Thank you all for your information.

Thread can now be locked/archived. :)

Perhaps regrettably, you are inevitably going to be trolled to death here.
It's not a topic that's really likely to be answered in a forum though. I guess you could get into nullsec blocs, but that would only really be on interest to anyone if you got up to a high enough level, by which point you might well be more invested in that alliance than the one you were planning to give information to.

Someone.
