Well, we saw a Romulan ship crash into San Francisco Bay in ST IV. Did you miss that ?

If a Romulan ship can do it, I would think a federation ship could.

Also, in Generations, the saucer section of the Enterprise survived until it hit the ground.

Well it's either have magic forcefields holding everything together (I see SIF generators! Where? Everywhere!) or have everything be made out of unobtanium.

Star Trek's use of SIFs are a little hard to swallow, but in the hands of someone like, say, Ian M. Banks, they're fairly awesome.

But didn;t they already do that, as far as I can tell the Warp drive, Inertial Dampeners and Structural Integrity fields are all the same thing, replacing stress on the vessel through acceleration to warping space time around the ship.

I much prefer the new Star Trek as its consistent in its approach and isn't reliant on techno babble to achieve its plot points.

Also how does Banks use them? Only read the Algabraeist and Player of Games....

First use of "unobtainium" in the movies that I know of was in "The Core." Quite underrated, actually.

Name a shrub after me.  Something prickly and hard to eradicate.

In his Culture novels (including Player of Games) Banks has "drones" that use what he dubs effector fields that essentially can function as hands for the AIs. But on larger scales, his System Class General Systems Vehicles are so large that they're held together by force fields rather than direct physical links.

I admit I watched the trailer with the sound off, but it looks to me like the overall plot is basically Mass Effect 3.
