Hello everyone. Recently i wanted to do some site scanning , but i didn't find any decent info about how to works(except from tutorial) and and guides from 2007 year seemed very different from tutorial. i cant find any probes mentioned there (quest ,pursuit and so on) in the game. Can any one help me here. What skills and gear i need to be good scanner near to perfect.
Thank you in advance.

Astrometics skills under the science category

For scanning sites you'll want core probes and a core launcher. Combat Probes and Deep Space Probes can be used for scanning players AND sites but have a MUCH weaker scan strength. Deep space probes are usually used just to verify that there is something out there cause they have the largest max scan range.

The actual scanning requires 4 probe minimum and some Three-Dimensional space understanding on your part. It works much like triangulation of earthquakes here on Earth, except that when we get two points one is in the ground and one is in the sky so we can rule one out automatically. In outer space we don't have that luxury so you need a fourth probe to figure out which one is your location.

Send out a few probes, at maximim range, set to cover the entire system. You don't need any overlap at this stage. With some systems, 1 probe is enough. With others, it's not. It helps to know that cosmic signatures are within 4au of a planet. So you don't need to cover all empty space.
When you can with this, if you don't get any signatures, then the system is probably empty. recall the probes and move on.

If you do find a signature, click on it. you'll get one of the following:
a red sphere: This means that one of your probes has a range to the signature. But as you only have one, it has no idea where on the surface of that sphere it is. bring in a few more probes, at a largish radius, to overlap over that sphere. rescan. you should get one of the following.
A red circle: This means that two of your probes have the signature in range. it lies somewhere on that circle. should be fairly simple to work out which two probes it is, from the angle of the circle. should be at right angles to the line between the two probes. Use your other probes to overlap the circle and you should get one of the following.
two red points: Three probes have range, so there are two possible locations. Use a fourth probe to check each one.
one red point: Now you're in business. reduce the range on your probes and reposition them to have an overlap over that point. Make sure to give it some leeway, as at least initially, your position won't be /that/ accurate. Make sure that they actually overlap, rather than overlapping, but being wrong on the Z axis. Move your camera around.
One yellow point: you're doing well. you've got a stronger signal. you should by now see what type of signature it is (unknown (wormhole or complex), radar (money money money with a codebreaker), magnetic (analyzer or salvager. not really worth it in highsec)), gravametric (asteroids for mining), ladar (gas mining. not high-sec)). Just reduce the probes by a size and reposition.
One green point: you need to get these to 100%. just keep reducing the size of the probes down. sometimes you'll find a site you can't scan all the way down. give it a few tries, just repositioning the probes a bit. give up before you go psychotic. But generally, you'll be able to get them. The more probes the better. Using a scout frigate and sisters core probes helps, as well as skills, as they give bonuses to scan strength.

Placement of probes:
4 probes: Triangle made of three probes horizontally, with the fourth above them, overlapping the scan signature.
5 probes: Diamond of 4 horizontally, fifth above overlapping the scan signature
6 probes: as above, but with 6th below and overlapping.
7 probes: never used this many :) often I just use 4, using the other two to keep a second signature localised.

CCP put out a scanning tutorial video when probing changed. Although it's changed a little bit since this video was created, it is still worth watching: Eve Online Scan Probe Tutorial Video

The major change since that video was made is now, if you hold down your ALT key while moving one of the outer probes, all of them will move. It makes probe movement and placement so much easier :)

What you do for yourself dies with you, what you do for others is immortal.
