Some pilots do things in certain ways or for certain reasons, that perplex others. MD is no different. Marketeers, bond traders, investors, fund managers, market makers, prediction manipulators good and bad ect, all have a little quirks and reasons for why and how they do things in eve.

Lets take an easy one and say Bonds.

Many outsiders of MD often scratch their heads and ask out loud why? Why do you offer them, Why to you Invest in them?

Next in line is always Scams.

Some are active in the pursuit of the scam. Others avoid the scam at all costs. Then there are the few who skirt the edge in the grey area between the two ends. Why?

Trade Trends?

Here we see manipulations, trend settings, people looking for tips ect. The list can go on....

The funny thing about the markets, and the investments is everyone one in their mind has a valid reason for why they are pro or con for every part of the Trade World in Eve. So why not share your reasons?

Early on in Industry/Trade, more capital can easily be leveraged to increase your income. If I can borrow someones money, and make enough to pay the interest and more for myself, then why not?

So this is a positive reason to seek Isk via bond, loan, or ipo for you.

This is mostly true. This is sort of the reason ive made the topic, to discuss why people find what they do as rational, when perhaps others do not.

For fun.

If not that, then I'd argue that you are doing it wrong.

Because one can? Perhaps even to prove a point?

A friend of mine liked to do things under both of those (the first within SL, the second within Travian). He's flat out said that he won't join here since he knows the first thing he'll do is scam like wild.

Usefulness is always a factor in choosing and setting a goal.

I agree that fun is a most important factor, but that is usually a bi-product gained from your other decisions.

Now we have something here. Proving a point can be a powerful motivator. Many pilots want to prove something, either to others to to themselves.

Usefulness is always a factor in choosing and setting a goal.

utility in that context is not "usefulness" but refers to a much broader concept: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utility

my comment was sarcastic in nature as many people like to refer to utility as if it could explain why some subject prefers one option over another.
"Option A has higher utility than option B (for subject X)" is by definition just a fancy way of saying "Subject X prefers A over B".
Saying "X prefers A over B because A has higher utility than B" is tautological nonsense (which doesn't seem to stop anyone from using it as an argument).

What I tried to say is:

Florestan Bronstein wrote:
because they are the best things we could do

(given our preferences, constraints, ...)

sounds nice but doesn't tell you anything.

Why we do, whatever we do here?
b/c we all need a reason for this - sitting in front of a monitor.

That was easy.

I can agree that we need value for our time withing game, but i don't think justifying our game time to ourselves is a leading factor in why we act on ideas, themes, or plans in game.
