The moment EA managed to ruin what was imo one of the best game series in KOTOR with the awful awful awful thing that was TOR, I lost any faith in them being able to produce a decent game that didn't involve kicking a ball around or hitting things with a stick.

EA are going to be bought out by Facebook.

Why? Origin. Imagine Origin integrated with Facebook, needing Facebook to login to anything EA has. Linking in achievements to the world. If I was in Facebook I would be saying now was the right time to strike, anyone want to bet Zuckerberg is the kind of guy to have had Simcity on preorder?

Of course Sim City isn't the issue. The author of the article is insane for even asking. When was the last time a CEO took responsibility for anything they weren't forced to? Never, as far as I know.

Jonah Gravenstein wrote:
What I find really amusing is their decision to not have an offline mode, yet all it took was a game mod to open up the possibility of just such a thing. The only thing that Simcity actually needs an internet connection for is to save your game, and given the speed at which the always online requirement was bypassed it won't be long before some clever sod gets round that restriction to.

The Simcity release is probably the biggest ballsup I've seen EA make yet, and given their past history it wouldn't surprise me to see the servers shut down by this time next year.

Edit- Just seen that they're threatening to ban people for having the gall to ask for a refund. That's damn poor customer service, if you ship something that's not fit for purpose, which Simcity wasn't on release date as evidenced by all the bits they patched out then they should give a refund to those that ask for it. It's no wonder they were voted worst company of 2012, it's just a shame that they have the IP rights for so many good franchises when they could be being developed by someone that actually gives a crap about providing a decent game experience over making an obscene profit

Yeah EA was claiming that the game wouldn't work offline because the server is involved in some of the calculations or some such. They've been obsessed with internet-based DRM for a while now. Why do you think the BF3 server browser is web based? It was a pretty obvious lie and at this point I don't understand how pathological liars like EA telling a lie is still considered news anyway.

(Not about Simcity, but certainly about EA and what's wrong with EA)

EA being evil/incompetent hasn't been news for many, many years. I honestly don't understand why anyone is still surprised.

Only if they also divest the various titles they're holding hostage, too.

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Because most people do not pay attention to the world of gaming as much as you do.

SimCity has had a broad appeal for decades now with a lot of people who normally do not play games.

Now it has hit them and they screamed loudly.

That's why.

EA has a big controversy at least annually, if not more. The only way I can think of to avoid hearing about it would be if you've been living in a Fallout style vault with no contact with the surface.

I just took a look at all the games they've produced or bought out, they have the rights to an awful lot of good stuff, most of the games I played in my youth appear on that list, the rest were probably Sierra Studios (Activision) games.

Speaking of great games, Lucas Arts need to stop producing crap and redo Day of the Tentacle, the Monkey Island series was good to.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

One thing a lot of sites are (rightfully) pointing out: Under the lead of Riticcelo EA has (sort of) turned away from it's previous antics of buying up studios and killing off franchises.

Stuff like Mirror's Edge would never have happened under the EA before him.

I just wonder what this means for the future - Will we go back to the EA of old or will we get a fresh, new EA which actually respects customers?

It's a shame that the companies that respect consumers the most tend to have the fewest of them. I wonder why that is.

It is pretty simple. Having a company that provides the best customer service is expensive. It requires hiring employees that aren't drones. Employees that aren't drones are expensive to employ and keep satisfied. So those costs get reflected into the price of the product. Since they can't compete because they already at a disadvantage said companies also decide to provide the most luxurious of products as well. Which further adds to the price. Now you are left with a subset of people that understand a product is more than its price tag. That market is very small.

That's because "cheaper" is the almighty go-word of marketing. Consumers love "cheaper". Manufacturers love "cheaper". "Cheaper" is the driving force behind the deterioration of all buying and selling.
