yeah there are some very cool people playing who recognise that you're completely outclassed and give you encouragement for trying.

I guess it didn't work as I'm still a carebear but I'm a more adventurous one lately.

As to gazelles and lions, if you read my post you would understand that I already understand the point to a lion killing a gazelle. That's utterly rational. I'm asking what's the point to doing such a thing where there is no benefit.

No benefit for whom? The gazelle? Someone needs to watch the Lion King and pay attention to the little father/son speech about the Circle of Life.

Carebears are bottom feeders. They serve very little purpose in the grand scheme of things, except as canon fodder for those higher up on the food chain. In a universe that is driven by conflict and fueled by a player-created economy, those who choose not to interact with others around them will simply be destroyed without a second thought.

While the carebear himself is insignificant, his destroyed ship provides loot and salvage for others and a business opportunity for those who build ships. In short, a carebear is worth more dead than alive.

Maybe he wasn't looking for "mindless PVP" and as many others stated he may have thought you were a spy or any other hazard to the system. If your interpretation of the conversation was in anyway accurate then the guy was more than likely just a tool but with such an exaggerated type of description, who knows what to believe.

You were in the wrong place at the right time in a noob ship. No big deal, let him have his big guy moment and just drive on with another free ship.

At any rate, good luck next time.

OP answered his own question: If you think GD is full of trolls, wait until you see lowsec.

Anyway, as far as I know, you don't earn "experience points" in this game by killing stuff, do you? And in the examples I am referring to, there is no piracy happening (stuff isn't taken from the victim - in fact there isn't any stuff to take). There are no assets being defended by the perpetrator because the perpetrator is never in a corp which owns the system in question (in fact, as far as I know 0.4 sec can't be owned by player corps), and the perpetrator seems to be operating as a "lone wolf."

Because kills like this one right here happen all the time in Eve. Someone tries to move expensive items in a noobship because hey it's free, and then gets killed. Sure that kill was in Jita, but it could have happened anywhere.

Don't underestimate the noobship.

Especially if it is piloted by some character named 'AFKCloaky CynoAlt'.

It has happened many times. Same modus operandi (cloaked cruiser, blah blah). Same results. Just a different system and different perpetrator every time.

I have zero doubts that I could pull up the map right now and randomly pick any 0.4 system anywhere, and go there in a noobship or venture. The same exact thing with the same exact modus operandi would happen in very short order. I think all these "cloaked cruiser gankers" studied at the same school or something.

Try it yourself. Just check your clone first.

If you're going to do it, just do it in my 0.4 system I hang out in ok.

Fit your Venture with a warp core stabilizer in the low slot, keep eye on the dscan, prealign while mining (align to something at low speed) and warp out immediately when you see anything on grid. Make safespots. None of these "cloaked cruisers" can catch a Venture who is at the keyboard- they have a targeting delay after decloaking before they can even start locking you up, so add this delay (5 seconds with max skills) + locking time = much much longer than Venture or noobship align time.

Also google up how to get your pod out alive if your ships is going down, unless someone already told you.

But Asmodai, you are correct that people shoot others without any reason that would make sense to you. EVE lacks meaningful objectives for solo and small gang pilots, so we are out there just for the thrill of the hunt. Killmails are important, every kill counts toward your monthly total, even if noobship kills generally look bad, or are even considered fakes. (people shooting their own alts for stats).

Or should a sandbox even present any objectives for players?

What kind of objectives a solo or small gang pilot could set, besides KB stats that satisfy them? (This is a real question). I love PVP, would adding some lite RP objectives improve my game?

Driving farmers out of wormholes would be something that I'd be interested in, but getting my space brosefs to shoot POSes is impossible, and I do understand them :D

Personally, I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Actually shooting my target is just the culmination of a series of steps I've taken to get on grid and in an advantageous position - Any of which could have gone wrong and resulted in the target escaping.
The target can be an industrial, mining ship or noobship if there's nothing else around to shoot, but ships which can defend themselves do make more of an interesting challenge - Especially if you're a player with limited means.

The kill (or loss)-mail is a souvenir to remind me and my ingame friends of a good hunt.

The smack talking in local or private convos, however, I cannot relate to. I can only conclude that a certain part of the playerbase has some alternative emotional needs. As long as they operate within the limits of the EULA, you'll have to live with them.
