Basic Principles Of Tanking

PVE builds (mission Builds) come a dime dozen, so I am going to avoid those for now. Instead I will be focusing on tanks designed for PVP purposes. The real reason for this is to minimize trolling...most “really good” PVP fits are well known enough so that when I post them I will get limited “EFT Warrior Trolling”

Everyone thinks they are a fittings god…
Even the people who have never flow said ships before [)]

So here we go!

First off, lets play a little game… can you name the ship below based only on it’s low slots and rigs? You only get one hint, it is a Battlecruiser hull…

Quote:
Low Slots:

[Unknown Ship, Buffer Tank]
Damage Control II
DPS Mod II
DPS Mod II
Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I

Rigs:

Medium Trimark Armor Pump I
Medium Trimark Armor Pump I
Medium Trimark Armor Pump I

Did you get it?
I’m guessing that you didn’t because it’s a trick question [)]

What you see above is a very basic “PVP Buffer Tank” and it can go on ANY ARMOR TANKING BATTLECRUISER of ANY RACE be it a Hurricane, Harbinger, Prophecy, Brutix or Myrmidon. All of the basic principles that we covered in the "Simplifying Ship Fittings" thread regarding Buffer + Resists + DPS are applied.

Now Lets Try To Name This Battleship Based Only On Low Slots + Rigs

Quote:
Low Slots:

[Unknown Ship, Battleship]
Damage Control II
DPS Mod II
DPS Mod II
DPS Mod II
Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I
1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I

Large Trimark Armor Pump I
Large Trimark Armor Pump I
Large Trimark Armor Pump I

Now if you’re an EFT warrior you can probably count the low slots and know which ship this is Lol That’s not really the point however, the point is simply that ALL BUFFER TANKS share the same mods and the same principles. It does not matter what race it is, nor does it matter whether or not it is a Battlecruiser or a Battleship.

Quote:

The fits are pretty much identical to one another.
..And the reason for this is that it's simply a mixing and matching of Buffer + Resists

Now Lets Do A Common “PVP Drake” Shield Tank

I am sure people are telling you that Drakes Suck… they are sooo wrong…

Quote:
[Drake, Basic PVP Drake]
Damage Control II
Ballistic Control System II------------------------------------DPS Mod
Ballistic Control System II------------------------------------DPS Mod
Power Diagnostic System II--------------[Need This To Get Everything To Fit/Adds Buffer]

Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive
Warp Disruptor II
Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I
Invulnerability Field II ----------------------------------------Resist
Invulnerability Field II-----------------------------------------Resist
Large Shield Extender II--------------------------------------Buffer

Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
Medium Core Defence Field Extender I

So here you have a PVP shield tank and it is based on exactly the same principles as the Armor Tank, Resists + Buffer + DPS. The only real differences between the Shield Tank and the Armor Tank are 1. The name of the mods and 2. Whether or not they go into a Low Slots or a Mid Slots.

EVERYTHING ELSE stays the same…

Putting In A Kind Word For All Of You Shield Tankers Out There:

Quote:
They keep telling you that shield tanks don't PVP well because PVP mods like a Warp Scramblers and Stasis Webs take up mid slots. Well the above Drake tank gets 15,000 more EHP and better resists then it's Armor tanking counter parts.

Throw it into EFT and see for yourself...

I got nothing but love for Drakes in all of their epic win configurations (that's right I said Drakes are epic win) Lol

An Example Of An Active Armor Tank [This One Is A Myrmidon]

Quote:
Low Slots:

Damage Control II
Medium Armor Repairer II
Medium Armor Repairer II
Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II

Rigs:

Medium Auxiliary Nano Pump I
Medium Nanobot Accelerator I
Medium Nanobot Accelerator I

SAME MODS AGAIN... only thing that we changed is that we removed the Buffer in favor of an active rep.

Now an example of an active shield tank...

Maelstrom Active Shield Tank

Quote:
b][Mid Slots[/b]

Quad LiF Fueled I Booster Rockets
X-Large Shield Booster II
Warp Disruptor II
Invulnerability Field II
Invulnerability Field II
Heavy Capacitor Booster II, Navy Cap Booster 800

We did the same thing here, we just removed the buffer mods and added Repair Mods in their place.

Quote:

Rule Of Thumb When Fitting Ships:ALWAYS play into your ships bonuses. If you want to make a great active repair ship then get yourself one that gets a bonus to it's active repair rate (preferable one that also gets a DPS bonus) Simple right?

So now that I have posted your basic run-of-the-mill Buffer Tank (for both shield and Armor) and then followed it with your basic Active Tank (for both Shield and Armor) you are probably seeing the similarities between them by now… Right?

Whatever you are trying to build will be a collection of the same handful of modules regardless of what ship you are trying to build. Ultimately there is no difference between a Gyrostabilizer and a Magnetic Field Stabilizer besides the fact that one goes on a Minmatar ship and the other goes on Gallente .

They do exactly the same thing…

The Devil Is In The Details? Right?
Quote:

Sure it is. The devil is a tricky little bast*rd but most of EVE Online’s population are running around in ridiculous fail fits. This post’s ONLY intent is to convey to the new player what kind of similarities you will find between ALL “good” ship fits.

Is There Anywhere I Can Find A Good Ship Fitting Guide?

This Guy made a GREAT one a few years ago...

I can't say that I agree with all of his build, but each and everyone are respectable and you won't go wrong flying any of them. So Enjoy!

Might also be worth pointing people to a fitting tool like EVE HQ .. that's very helpful to play around with ideas and check for DPS (damage per second) tanking ability and capacitor stability.

There is also a very old post by Friedrick Psitalon, "The Comprehensive New Player Guide to Tanking" which may be of use.
