What makes a game Eroge?
I know because of the topic of this subject it might get locked. but for the moment lets try and keep this as serious as possible.
Now for those who don't know what Erogue is heres a quick history from what i gathered from a quick internet search. Erogue was set up some time ago as a style of cartoon anime pornographic gaming in Japan. Where you play as a guy and all the girls just want to sleep with you. But after playing the same story a few thousand times, Guy meets girl they shag, guy meets gig they shag, guy… and so on. People got board with this. no plot or story and those that did they have already played many times before. So from this Erogue Evolved its style into fantasy and RPG games. games where you have to work hard at seducing the women and you have to increase skills like other RPG games out there on the market. Erogue as time passed to the modern consumer has evolved to such an extent I'm trying to figure out what is a Erogue game now and how would you define it.

Game like Mass Effect and Dragon Age as well as many others seem to be following the base rules where if you do the right thing and say the right words you are rewarded at some point with a sex scene which is the point of most of the adult Erogue games. they even include the other side aspect of Erogue which is BL (Boy Love) in the form of the gay relationships that you can stride for in these games.
So my question i put to the internet is this.

Are Games like Mass effect and Dragon Age, considered to be Erogue games or not?
i believe that sum of the designers and developers are from japan. and although they may not be cartoon drawn but in todays society cartoons have been replaced in films by computer graphics.
intact the only cartoons i see today that are not computer graphics are anime.
But then again are anime cartoons or will cartoons be computer graphics but anime will always be anime
interesting to see how they will develop considering how they have come so far.

I wouldn't call them eroge. They're mainly RPG games that have sexual situations included. I'd say they're just more adult oriented games, since they don't shy away from sex or treat it as a childish fairy tale love between a hero and a princess. It's a more realistic fantasy story where you accept the fact, that sex/love is important to adult relationships and it is therefore included as part of their story.

On the other hand most eroge games I've played the sex is integral part of the game, there is a good dose of it and it is explicit. Some of the shittier ones are nothing but sex and are barely games, while the good ones are good games with sex. Take sengoku rance for example. It's a good story driven strategy game, with erotic situations being integral part of the gameplay. The main character is sex driven, the character relationships are sex driven, the unit upgrades are driven by the relationship between the main character and the unit commander and you get must have upgrades to your army, when the satisfaction level of your main character reaches certain levels.

The difference becomes quite apparent. In typical modern RPG games the sex is something extra added to the game to spice things up and make the relationships between characters better and more satisfying. In eroge the erotic parts of the game are integrated deeply into the core gameplay, are usually very explicit and are a major part of the game. I guess there are some borderline cases where you could include them in either categories, but ME and DA aren't such cases. They're very typical RPGs, that have decided to include the more adult parts of human relationships as part of the official roleplaying and I think they're better RPGs because of it.

Well actually I was linking to the Dragon Age build team that is pretty much devoid of Japanese developers......
