Hello travelers,
im thinking to buy an used imac. Will be my first mac and the main reason im buiing it is because i want to learn more about mac osx ( i have good linux and unix experience but not much about osx ). One person i know is selling this model:

iMac Spec:
24" - 1920 x 1200 pixels
Core 2 Duo, 3.06Ghz
8Gb DDR3 1066Mhz
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 - 512MB of GDDR3
640Gb HD 7200 RPM

link to full specs

Even if the main purpose of the purchase is not to play eve, Im wondering how good would be playing eve with this mac. Obviously the new ones ( even the basic one) are better, but im looking for a cheaper option to learn about the apple world.

thanks in advance.

oh, c'mon guys. Im sure there is someone with a 2009 imac out there. I dont expect that can run all tdetaild maxed. I would know if it can run a single mode with average settings or something like this.

It will probably run it fine. How well depends on what your used to. I run eve in Bootcamp because I feel that the performance is much better.
If your coming from a PC, you may find that running it under OSX a little glitchy.
I wouldn't let Eve sway you one way or the other, as far as buying a Mac is concerned, though. As I said, theres always Bootcamp.Smile

I've played Eve in a system with very similar specs, same cpu, half of your RAM and it run nicely - however, you must know that the iMac has in general a little 'overheating' problem, so I would monitor temperatures. I've had system locks and probable hardware failures due to this and there is another thread here somewhere that tells a similar story (for a MacBook Pro or so, tho).

So you should mostly be fine playing Eve with this iMac. I never played it on bootcamp, so I cannot compare.

And welcome to Mac OS X, you will have a great experience. We are cool....lol.

If you want to learn about Mac OS X, I recommend reading the very good articles by John Siracusa over at arstechnica... the most recent on Lion is this (you may want to read his older articles first, e.g. begin with the Tiger review and bite yourself up to the Lion one) - I can guarantee you a good trip, esp. with your *nix background

I use an 06 iMac at one location, two clients low settings, works pretty good.

Install SMC Fan Control and crank up the fans, replacing a Fan is way cheaper than a Logic Board, or GFX card.

I use the same machine you are looking at buying, mine has half the memory, runs two clients fine.

I used to have the june 2010 model, and now have the most current 2011 model, both seemed to run EVE above expectations in both OS X as well as "Windows 7 installed through boot camp" and after reviewing the specs for the 2009 model, it should run eve to your satisfaction, and possibly above what you may expect, especially if run with the OS X client. So i wish you good luck, safe travels and fly safe in New Eden

-- sorry for any run on sentences and poor punctuation, I was never much good at inserting non-letters in their correct places

--Additional thought, if you can verify whether or not it is fully and functionally compatible with "OS X Lion" also known as OS X (10.7), which being only 2 years old, i don't see why it wouldn't be, i would suggest upgrading
