DED site difficulty + fleeting up

Hi all,

Having just completed the sisters of eve arc I've started to have a look at exploration. I was doing a bit of scanning in Arnon 0.6 and ended up pin-pointing what I've read is a DED site called Serpentis Phi-Outpost.

I switched to my Destroyer and had a look, however it had -many- enemies in it, and the two I warped in nearest two were hitting pretty hard so I left it alone.

The site was stated as a 4/10 difficulty. I was wondering is the difficulty based on what sec status of the system you are in? If I was to go to a 0.7 / 0.8 system would I come across DED sites which I could manage?

Also is it worth fleeting up to tackle them? I was thinking I could try and get a group together and clear through it for fun, but I'm not sure how looting works in fleets and I don't think Id want to spend the time for a lot lot less reward.

fleet works, but bounties get split. So if you're with 4 people, and there's a 10k ISK bounty rat, you each get 2500 ISK (less any applicable taxes).

it's partially based on system sec status (IIRC 4/10 is the best you can get in hisec ... but it's been a while since I've played, so my info may be incorrect).

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

The problem with fleeting for combat exploration sites is that most of the payout is in the deadspace mods, of which there will probably only be one at most (and often none). So unless you trust your fleetmates to sell and split the value of the item with you...

4/10 is the highest rated DED site in highsec. With a destroyer, 2/10, maybe 3/10 (but very slowly and you may struggle with the last room) is what you can tackle.

4/10 you can use a BC, I've done one and I made a good chunk of ISK from it.
However be aware BCs can't do 3/10 or lower.
So usually what I do is I use a cruiser for the most part but if I find a DED 4/10 I will hop over to my BC real quick and get it

Gratz on getting into exploration.

It's an excellent career and if you do a little bit of research before hand, it can become a very profitable and fun choice. By research I mean check out various guides and info available, such as Google, Youtube, the 'Missions & Complexes' sub-forum and of course Evelopedia.

Basically for a beginner, fleeting up with a few other players around the same skill level as you is a very good idea. I can remember years back when I first started exploration, I'd fleet up in a gang with a few other members just to run the new 'Vigil' sites. Was a lot of fun, especially when the site escalated into expedition.

Not to mention seeing your 'braggart' friends warp out to recharge while you managed to stay in the site was always a plus. TIP: Keeping distance will help diminish the amount of incoming damage when you're young, ie: still training up core fitting / defense skills.

All DED Deadspace Complexes are restricted to specific hull types.

DED 1/10 = Frigate class hulls.
DED 2/10 = Destroyer and lower class hulls.
DED 3/10 = Cruiser and lower class hulls.
DED 4/10 = Battlecruiser and lower class hulls.
DED 5/10 = Battleship and lower class hulls.
DED 6/10 and higher = Fleet with Logistics support.

As a new player / explorer, look for the DED 1/10 and 2/10 sites as well as the unrated sites 'Hideout' and 'Lookout'. Those will be a fun challenge for you running solo. With a couple of friends fleeted, can quickly complete those sites with no problem and have a lot of fun doing it.

With a few friends fleeted, you can also jump on the DED 3/10 and 'Watch' sites. Those sites will definitely be a test of not only your trained skills, but also your piloting and fitting skills. More than likely will require a few warp outs til you've skilled up.

DED 4/10 and the 'Vigil' sites are very tough and will definitely require more experience.

Don't forget about Cosmic Anomalies, I use to have the fleet mates run those while I was scanning down the Cosmic Signatures. Cosmic Anomalies have a small chance to spawn a Commander NPC with a random chance to drop Faction loot. There's an even smaller chance of the site escalating to expedition.

Main thing is to always try to have something available for the fleet mates to occupy their time while you're scanning. That way you'll be able to quickly have your fleet jump on the larger sites when you find them instead of having to bypass those sites due to being alone, unskilled and inexperienced.

Anyway, good luck to you and remember = Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

Fleeting up with other people is pretty much ALWAYS a good plan:

--If you're new and they're experienced, then they can teach you things and have your back when you do stupid stuff.
--If you're both new, at least you're dividing NPC fire.
--If you're experienced and they're experienced, then DEDs are kinda boring, and having someone else to talk to while doing them alleviates the boredom.
--If you're experienced and they're new, then not only are you helping out (probably) a corp-mate, they kinda owe you one in the future when you need someone to help move your imaginary space couch or whatever.

Also, note that having friends (as well as having more sp and experience) will loosen the suggested ship sizes on the sites. If you're solo looking at an L4 as a newer player, probably you're going to need to bring a BC if you're not looking to waste several long, boring, grindey hours on that. With a buddy (or some fully-skilled ship skills) you're probably fine in some cruisers or even a mixed group with frigs/destroyers.

Basically, there's no downside. The theoretical downside, that the loot/isk/etc gets divided, is actually a red herring: two people will clear combat sites significantly more than twice as fast as one person, so your returns per person are increased. Now, this isn't necessarily true of going from 2 to 3 people or 3 to 4, but from 1 to 2 there are very few exceptions.

(As far as splitting up officer module loot, the key phrases are "don't be a ****" and "don't sweat whether you're absolutely optimized", pretty much the same as the rest of the game.)

Difficulty is based on what kind of site it is. 6/10 is harder than 4/10, etc. The type of sites you can find are based on security status. For example, 7/10 and above are only in null sec. This link probably has most of what you want to know.

Most 4/10s are blitzed (soloed VERY quickly) by players in tech 2 cruisers and tech 3 strategic cruisers with very impressive fits. They are well beyond what a destroyer with tech 1 modules will be able to manage.

One key thing blitzers know is what damage types the enemies do and they set up a tank to minimize that damage. A player blitzing Serpentis sites might run an Ishtar with 91% Kinetic resist and 89% Thermic resist, which makes them borderline invincible in there while their drones do 800+ damage per second.

If one of these people scans down the site when you are in it, they will likely be the one to scoop the main loot as they will know where it drops. (In lowsec they will just kill you unless they have reason to fear you).

Do try to find 2/10 sites, however - these are less desired and hence less contested.
