New dev blog: Community Communication Liaisons – The return of the volunteer moderator program

This smells worse than my bollocks after a hard workout, IMO.

It's just an underhanded way of getting free "volunteers" to replace the paid employees you just jetcanned - much like local supermarkets now have fewer clerks and more "U-scan" stations for "speed" and "convenience", or local TV news encourages people to upload their videos for broadcast on TV.

Throw around enough buzzwords like "social engagement" and "community team" and it might make some players feel special, but those who see through the buzzwords will be alienated.

While your announcements for the Winter expansion have done much to bandage the foot you blew off with the NeX gun, this announcement combined with the potential screwing your Japanese player base is likely to take, are another round chambered and aimed at your other foot.

With the recent 20% cuts still oozing blood, this was just not the right time to announce this program, you really should have backed off on this until AFTER the next expansion.

I don't even PLAY the game for six hours most weeks anymore, why would you think I'd want to WORK for NOTHING for six hours a week for CCP, given the occurrences of last week?

Certainly there must be people within CCP who are angry at this announcement as well.

"Volunteers can remove offensive, trolling, flame and spam content...."

Although I'm fully in agreement with this, I cannot help but wonder how content is determined to be offensive, trolling, flame or spam. I assume there are guidelines, and the ISD team will work to keep those guidelines up-to-date as various judgment calls are made on edge cases?

Will the ISD volunteers be helping shape the guidelines with their observations? For example "As soon as this sort of post (one that currently is not considered a troll) shows up in a thread, it just dissolves into rants and trolling. Maybe we should just delete the edge case post first, rather than try to control all that follows"?

Not interested, you have some really good forum moderators currently looking for new jobs. I'm not going to replace them for free.

I completely appreciate that, Mashie, and thank you very much for your feedback.

I noted a distinct lack of banstick access.

I could be a bit more serious about this later, but first things first: a clarification is in order, with some help from TheNoobComic.
What volunteers pretty much hope for: http://www.thenoobcomic.com/index.php?pos=212

What will likely happen: http://www.thenoobcomic.com/index.php?pos=376

The forum content has degraded massively over the last year, you might say a wow-ification has taken place, for pretty much the same reasons as it happened there.
Malcontent among players, bad and/or lacking/dishonest communication, insufficient (and outright lacking) smackdowns, frustration over broken things. The sensible and reasonable have largely realized that their efforts are and have been in vain, futile, and stopped posting, much like certain class sections on wow forums gave up hope long ago, after the silencings of vocal experts.

So, what is my point?

My point is that you need to be a lot clearer about what you seek from volunteers. What kind of policy and attitudes you want enforced and removed. How far you are willing to let them go, to get the job done.
Until then you will have a huge churn, until some time (way too late) you get what you hoped for.

Something as vague as "remove offensive, ... content in threads and posts" and "misleading or incorrect title" simply does not cut it, to determine what is expected. And noone wants to labour through the forum for hours only to have the majority of their decisions overturned by the "true" moderators.

Frankly, more than half of the posts on the forums are, without generalizing too much, puke and brainfarts. Sure we can be more specific about it, but this will suffice for the sake of the argument.
If you want it cleaned up, then you need to give people the tools/power and let them hand out the tough love needed to bring this house in order.

On top of that argument, there is this paltry that the devs/gms still employed have to call salary

The devblog mentions: "editing posts and threads". Does this include locking, or will only paid CCP employees be doing that, with the volunteers focusing on removal of offensive content and moving misplaced threads?

so do volunteers get any reward for doing this? such as free game time?

Everytime you buy something that says "made in china" you are helping the rising unemployment in your own country unless you are from china, Buy locally produced goods and help create more jobs.
