I gotta say I don't like this and I don't really get it either. He complains how virtual worlds have become less real, open and immersive, but I don't see how the actual planned mechanics will be all that much different. How can it even be all that, when I can even choose not to be online to play it and the PvP is planned to be incentivized by the system. I mean it sounds like a typical MMO, but is just a singleplayer game with online elements or online game with single player elements? If what happens on your own computer has influence on the online part, isn't cheating going to be a big problem?

I have to say pass on this one.

Planescape i want to support. But I remain unconvinced by this project.

Maybe CCP should launch this for WoD funding?

After Tabula Rasa, Richard Garriott completely lost what little faith I had left in him. Ultima was a fluke. He's a one hit wonder.

It's not an MMORPG, rather a multiplayer game. Tthe details will be outlined in a later devblog (it's day 1 in Kickstarter still), but if there is a single man in the industry who knows everything a developer should know about single player RPG, online RPG and MMORPGs, it's the creator of Ultima and Ultima Online.

Ultima I to IX + Ultima Online, those one-hit wonders... Lol

Someone start a kickstarter to send Lord/General British back to space where he belongs.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

One of the critiques of this Kickstarter drive is that RG dropped a bunch of money to be a space tourist, and is now begging for cash to work on his new game.

I've watched the in-game vids and lurked the forums and TBH, I haven't really seen anything revolutionary. While I was a big fan of the original Ultima games (on the Apple ][e in Jr. High) I didn't play UO and after the TR debacle, I have to say that my faith in RG doesn't rise to the level of donating to his next endeavor.

"More games" is always better, but this is looking like another variation on a (banal) theme, unfortunately.

He's not making it an MMO; it's going to be a single-player game that can be played online.

When he talks about 'less immersive worlds', he means that virtual worlds have become very static. You buy a weapon from an NPC, go and smash a few monsters, go and buy a better weapon, rinse and repeat, and there's very little to allow you to 'lose yourself' in the gameworld.

With Richard Garriot's games, interactivity is key: if you come across a can of flour, you can find water and and an oven, and bake bread. if you want a sword, you can get a sword blank and a few lumps of metal and make one. NPCs each have their own schedules -- shops close and lock at night, the shopkeepers take breaks and have lunch at the local pub, and how much they like you depends entirely on how you've interacted with them in the past.

As for the offline nature of the game: Richard Garriot is not about MMOs. When he formed Origin, 'multiplayer gaming' meant split-screen, hot-seat play on one computer. His experience lies i single-player, so I hope he sticks to what he's shown the most capability to deliver :).
