I'm all for it. The SP and the equipment are far less important than the skill of the player. This isn't a game that values grinding. This game values cleverness.

Edit: Poetic asked this question on multiple threads and I replied to the wrong one. Because I am dumb. Enjoy my shame. :)

Wish I could agree. This game should reward cleverness, but exceedingly it has been rewarding laziness, and one-click-success-stories like dropping corp or activating an auto-repeating mining module.

Mangala for CSM!!! He has my vote!!!

  1. Mang you've been active in EvE for many years now, what prompted you to stand for CSM this year?

  2. Team Super Friends are constantly making quality of life changes to the UI - do you believe they are on the best possible track with regards to the enhancements and fixes, or are there other changes you would encourage them to prioritise?

  3. If CCP do not have any resource to make enhancements to the new player experience in the near future, what kind of things are you actively doing yourself to help new player retention?

  4. What are your thoughts on skill point loss and clone replacement cost?

Thanks for the questions Penelope, I have tried my best to answer them below.

1) There are two answers to this:

  • First one is the "fun" one: Some unnamed person posted a thread on the RvB forums saying why does RvB not run a candidate. The first response was Mangala should do it. The thread spiralled from there.

  • The "serious" one is that while numerous candidates from High Sec have come forward over the past few years, they have never really gained much traction with the voting public. I feel this is because they were usually a tad too radical in their views on pvp, especially in high sec. Which, when the core of the game is about pvp, just would not fly.
  • Now myself, I have several years of experience of high sec pvp under my belt, and a much more open mind on it in general, so while I do not just see myself purely as a high sec candidate, I think someone who actually pvp's representing high sec dwellers is a good thing, and so here I am.

2) Superfriends has my undying love & respect for the work they are doing. They are really on the right path with regards to UI improvements and should I be elected I would relish the opportunity to sit down with them, discuss my own ideas - which seem to dovetail in some ways with theirs (I noted down a wish to drag & drop fleet members a few weeks ago, then suddenly while on vacation it happens!) - and continue their good work of making the client that much better for old & new players alike.

3) I try my best to ensure that new players are socialised as much as possible in order to get to get them to stay. In RvB this takes the form of helping with our Noobfleet initiative - answering questions, providing other assistance and even dueling players to hull - all things which keep them interested in RvB & EVE.
Away from RvB, I try to be active in the Help channels in game - again with an aim of socialising newer players, directing them to suitable organisations for their needs. I do this on the forums too regardless of which account I am posting with at the time.
It is my strong belief that if a new player gets into the community right away they are more likely to stay than those who are told that corporations will rip you off, wont utilise you, just want you as fodder for enemies guns or even worse are informed by many in their starter NPC corporations that they should mine/mission all alone to make their early isk.

4) I have not really used Strategic Cruisers much in the past, so have not really experienced this for myself, however right now I am training all the sub systems up. Result of this, it seems to me that SP loss from the destruction of your Strat Cruiser is a small price to pay considering how quickly the levels train compared to other ship skills.
As for clone replacement costs, they are too much (I just passed the point when clones begin costing 30million isk to replace before any implants go in). When a clone can cost anywhere from 50% of the value/more than the hull you lost before your clone died then surely this can lead to people becoming risk averse, and that is a bad thing for pvp in EVE. Worst case scenario for me is an end to cheap ship combat as everyone starts to reach higher levels of clone costs and invests in expensive "better" hulls as a way to minimise clone losses. It is something I certainly want to bring up - on behalf of all players - with CCP should I be elected or not.

Wish to "thank you" sir for appearing on the HighDrag podcast on so short of notice. Hopefully, it was a primer for when Xander gets his (metaphorical) hands on you.

The Ganked roams I participated I were massively disastrous drunken welps of chaotic fail, but will certainly vote- instigators are the rare gems of New Eden, who make this game.

And Mangala Solaris is definitely one that creates content for a huge number of players.

Thanks Roime, its not something I ever set out to do, but it is something I love to do!

In other news, I have just submitted my Candidate App to CCP. Wish me luck folks!

Also, Mach Eon from RvB made a couple of posters to try and encourage people to vote in the upcoming Pre-Election & main election. Take a look:

"Having exploded Mangala more than I can remember"
How does that make you know he's more than qualified to be a part of the CSM?

If you really believe in Mangala Solaris, please stop posting so much **** and spam in this thread. It really kills it.
A lot of you see Mangala as a good CSM because he FC's the GANKED fleets. It tell us nothing about Mangala or what he'll do in CSM.

I'm 100% behind Mangala. He's an absolutely stand-up guy (well, except when he's too drunk to stand up, in which case he's a kind of slouched-in-his-directors-chair kind of guy). Mang has done a lot to drive content, drive enjoyment and drive involvement and community spirit within both RvB and the regular Ganked attendees.

I think this game will be better off for him having an opportunity to work with CCP, to hold them to account, and to help to give the focus needed to improve the game for newer and more casual players, as well as for those who have to do a ton of regular organising and logistical work. I think everyone who's here loves the core of this game, but there are lots and lots of niggles and "wtf's" that can spoil our enjoyment from time to time. I think Mang is the right person to sort it.

I also think that finally having someone on the CSM who's in it to see people have more FUN, rather than more industry/nullsec drones who do it for a second job (no offence, of course) might not be such a bad idea.

So we should neglect whoever does not play EVE like you do, because it's boring (according to you). It sounds like a very good and narrow-minded mindset.

You sound a bit angry mate. Relax have a cup of tea.

Null and company already have their candidates line up and with all possible backing. Can't we have one that represents some different way to play the game?

Or maybe do you want all the CSM to cater to your play stile?

Oooh. That's me told. Back in my box.

In other news, there are multiple members of a CSM so that they can reflect multiple different viewpoints, not so that the same old characters can block out all of the spots in order to push their own agendas. Sorry, who's narrow minded? For not wanting to dislike playing EVE?

Honestly?

I love it. Its a great example of the emergent game play found in EVE. If it goes off, then i can see it providing a huge amount of content for those involved at all levels. And even for those not involved like me who would run a few drunk roams into the target region!

It is also an excellent demonstration to CCP of what people feel they need to do in creating content when it is apparent that CCP's attempts are somewhat broken (yet another high HP structure grind Sov system for instance). Lets hope if it does happen, that CCP sit up and pay attention.
